Indiana Heads To Rutgers With A Real Chance To Silence Doubters

The Indiana Hoosiers aim to maintain their undefeated streak as they tackle tactical tweaks and injury concerns ahead of their road game against a vulnerable Rutgers team.

Indiana’s trip to Rutgers comes with the kind of contrast that usually makes a road game feel comfortable on paper: the Hoosiers are 4-0, ranked sixth in the country, and facing a Scarlet Knights team with plenty of questions hanging over its future. But this isn’t a clean setup. Indiana brings its own concerns into Saturday night, even with a real chance to keep building momentum.

The Hoosiers’ offense has put up 43.5 points per game, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten, yet it still feels like there’s another gear waiting to be found. That’s part of what makes this matchup interesting for Curt Cignetti and offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan. Rutgers gives Indiana a chance to get Josh Hoover and the passing game rolling while also trying to nurse a banged-up run game back toward health.

Rutgers has been vulnerable all season, giving up 28.5 points per game, second-worst in the Big Ten. Against Power Four competition, the Scarlet Knights are allowing 264.5 passing yards per game, and that opens the door for Indiana’s receivers against a secondary that may be missing Kevyn Humes and Kaj Sanders. With Nebraska, Ohio State and Michigan coming up, this is the kind of game where Indiana would love to get Hoover in rhythm before the schedule tightens.

The running back situation, though, is where the concern really starts to pile up. Indiana got encouraging news Wednesday with Turbo Richard listed as probable, but the room is still thin. Khobie Martin is already out with a broken arm, Sean Cuono was added as questionable, and IU only has five running backs on the roster.

That leaves Lee Beebe Jr. and first-year back Jayreon Campbell as the only healthy options right now. Beebe looked excellent in the win over Northwestern, but two healthy backs is a shaky place to live, especially for a team with bigger games ahead. Indiana has to hope Richard is able to go and that the depth chart doesn’t get any thinner.

Up front on defense, Indiana still looks like a problem even if the preseason buzz around that unit has been a little louder than the production so far. The Hoosiers have 33 tackles for loss and 11 sacks through four games, and they should have a favorable matchup against a Rutgers offensive line that has already allowed 15 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Indiana will be without rotational defensive end Daniel Ndukwe, but Stephen Daley is back full-time, and he has been IU’s best defensive lineman again this season. That matters here, especially after Indiana had trouble finishing plays against Aidan Chiles and allowed Northwestern’s quarterback to escape and extend drives with his legs last week.

Rutgers wideout KJ Duff is the danger man on the other side. At 6-6 and 225 pounds, he brings size, route running and a huge catch radius, and he has been one of the few bright spots for a mostly struggling team.

Duff has 29 catches for 550 yards and seven touchdowns, and the Hoosiers’ secondary has not exactly looked settled. New faces are still learning, and Indiana has been in zone coverage nearly 87% of the time this season, a slight increase from last year.

After getting exposed a bit against Northwestern, Indiana may need to change the picture against Rutgers. Jamari Sharpe could draw Duff in coverage, with Byron Baldwin or Amare Ferrell helping over the top. But the cleaner answer may be the one Indiana prefers most: let the pass rush take over and force pressure on turnover-prone quarterback Dylan Lonergan.

Indiana Is In The Hunt For A Massive DeVries Recruiting Win

Indiana is in the thick of a major recruiting battle for one of the top big men in the 2027 class, as five-star center Darius Wabbington has trimmed his list to the Hoosiers, Illinois and Arizona. Wabbington has already taken official visits to all three programs, giving each staff a chance to make its pitch to a highly regarded center who would be a major get for whichever school lands him.

The process is still far from over, though, and that is what keeps this one in play for Mike Woodson's successor and the Hoosiers' next recruiting push. Wabbington also has other visits lined up later this fall, so Indiana has already made the cut but still has more work to do before this race starts to close. [Read more 🡒]

Rutgers Gave USC A Real Fight And Indiana Fans Should Notice

Rutgers opened its 2026 season with a loss to UMass and still sits at 1-3, but the Scarlet Knights have shown enough fight in recent weeks to make people pay attention. Against Boston College and then USC, Rutgers was competitive in ways that matter for teams around the Big Ten, with quarterback Dylan Lonergan, running back Antwan Raymond and wide receiver KJ Duff each helping keep the offense moving.

For Indiana fans, the bigger takeaway is less about Rutgers record and more about the style of game it brought to USC. The detailed breakdown of that matchup showed the Scarlet Knights finding answers on offense and making the Trojans work for everything, which is the sort of performance that can travel in conference play. Even if the final result still leaves Rutgers in a hole, the recent stretch suggests this is not a group opponents can afford to take lightly. [Read more 🡒]

Indiana Fans Have A New Recruiting Weekend To Obsess Over

The recruiting calendar is already giving Indiana fans another reason to keep one eye on the scoreboard and the other on the travel schedule. Chase Branham, the future Hoosiers guard, is in Las Vegas this week for the Wootten 150 basketball camp, while several other top Indiana targets are spread across the Border League event, where a number of highly regarded prospects with Hoosiers offers are also competing.

For Indiana, the appeal is obvious: these fall runs offer a fresh look at players the staff is still sorting through, and a chance to watch them in a setting packed with talent. Darius Wabbington, who has already taken an official visit to Bloomington, is among the names to keep tracking as he works through his college options, which gives this weekend a little extra weight for a fan base that has been waiting for the next recruiting wave to take shape.
