Indiana’s 2026 season could be defined by the obvious names drawing preseason attention, but two lesser-known Hoosiers are starting to generate real buzz inside the program.
247Sports national reporters Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz included Indiana sophomore wide receiver Davion Chandler and transfer EDGE Joshua Burnham on their list of 100 breakout players to watch for 2026, a nod to the kind of upside both players flashed this spring.
Chandler, a former four-star in-state recruit from Lawrence North in Indianapolis, showed a glimpse of what he can do as a true freshman last season when he hauled in a 65-yard touchdown against Purdue. Now the 5-foot-11, 181-pound receiver looks set for a bigger role. He worked with both the first and second units during spring camp, and he’s expected to open the season as a rotational slot receiver alongside redshirt senior Tyler Morris.
The Hoosiers already have major talent at receiver in Charlie Becker and Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh, who ranked among the top 15 overall players to enter the transfer portal this past cycle. Even with that group in place, Indiana’s staff is clearly high on Chandler and believes he can become a factor in the slot.
247Sports quoted a source describing Chandler’s athletic profile this way: "He runs 4.4, jumps 40 inches, low 4.0 shuttle," a source said. "The biggest thing that he had to do was just mature and understand that if he really wanted to go to that next level that he really had to take care of his off-the-field stuff and all of that. He's done that."
Burnham arrived in Bloomington after four seasons at Notre Dame, and the early returns have been strong enough to put him on the radar as a possible impact defender right away. The No. 29-ranked EDGE transfer impressed Indiana’s coaching staff in the spring with his athleticism and ability to get after the quarterback, and he’s expected to be part of IU’s top pass-rush group with Tobi Osunsanmi, Chiddi Obiazor and Daniel Ndukwe.
He comes to Indiana after posting 16 tackles and three sacks last season at Notre Dame, and 247Sports said the Hoosiers believe he could become a major piece of the defense.
One source put it bluntly: "He's going to have a chance to have a hell of a year, just his overall ability to rush the passer, but also to be able to play the run," a source said. "He's a big, physical guy that also has burst and speed."
