Indiana and Howard both bring plenty of production into their Week 2 meeting in Bloomington, and the numbers tell a pretty clear story about how each team is trying to win.
At quarterback, Indiana’s Josh Hoover and Howard’s Ja’Shawn Scroggins are coming in from very different places. Hoover went 13-for-16 for 231 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in IU’s Week 1 win, a line that was as clean as it gets.
Scroggins, meanwhile, has piled up 424 passing yards and four touchdowns, but he’s done it on 28 completions in 63 attempts with one interception. He’s averaging 15.1 yards per completion, but the completion rate sits at 44%.
The ground game follows a similar split. Indiana’s Turbo Richard led the Hoosiers with 15 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
He also finished with 155 all-purpose yards, and with Khobie Martin out for the next few weeks, Richard should see even more chances. Indiana’s rushing attack needed a 43-yard touchdown run from backup quarterback Grant Wilson just to get over 100 yards as a team.
Howard’s top runner is also Scroggins, who has 28 carries for 88 yards. If sacks are removed, he has 133 rushing yards. He’s a threat with the ball in his hands, but he’ll be dealing with an Indiana defensive line that has something to prove.
Through the air, Indiana has already shown it can spread the ball around. Charlie Becker led the Hoosiers with four catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
Howard’s top receiver has been Se’Quan Osborne, who has four receptions for 101 yards and a score. Indiana could lean deeper into its receiving group this week and give some younger players more work.
That said, Howard’s passing game has big-play potential. The Bison are allowing 257 passing yards per game, but they also have the speed to hit explosives, especially when Scroggins has time.
Against Alabama A&M, Howard connected on two passes of 50-plus yards. Indiana may be without its starting cornerbacks on Saturday, which puts the spotlight on the deep ball.
Defensively, Indiana’s Isaiah Jones leads the way with 12 total tackles and eight solo stops. The Hoosiers were sloppy in that area against North Texas, missing 14 tackles, and that’s the kind of detail they’ll be pressing this week.
Howard’s top defender has been Aiden Foster, who has 14 total tackles, 10 solo tackles and one sack. He’s coming off a seven-tackle game against Richmond and gives the Bison a player Indiana’s offense will need to account for.
