Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover is expected to be available when the Hoosiers return home to face Minnesota on Saturday, even after playing through a wrist injury in last weekend’s overtime win at Michigan.
IU coach Curt Cignetti made that clear Monday, saying Hoover should be ready to go and trending upward.
"I expect him to be fine and better this week," Cignetti said.
The injury was part of the conversation throughout Indiana’s win in Ann Arbor, where the staff even weighed whether to turn to seventh-year backup Grant Wilson at halftime. Cignetti said after the game that Wilson had pushed himself into the discussion with a strong week of practice.
"There was a lot of discussion about Grant Wilson and Josh Hoover in the second half because Grant had a good week of practice," Cignetti said Saturday after IU's win at Michigan. "He's very capable.
He's big, strong, and can run. I think at the end of the day, we felt like it's been Josh's season, and even though he's not 100 percent, we've got to finish it out with him, and he responded.
And he's only going to get better physically from here on out."
Hoover’s line in the victory showed how much the injury affected the passing game. He finished 8-of-18 for 81 yards with no passing touchdowns and one interception. He didn’t complete a pass after halftime until finding second-year tight end Brock Schott in overtime, then finished the job himself with the game-winning rushing touchdown that sealed Indiana’s first win in Ann Arbor since 1967.
Through eight games, Hoover has completed 62.0 percent of his throws for 1,741 yards, 18 touchdowns and one interception. His 84.6 quarterback rating ranks ninth in the FBS.
If Indiana needs Wilson, the Hoosiers know what they have. The seventh-year quarterback arrived from Old Dominion before the 2025 season after starting his career at FCS school Fordham. He was IU’s third-string quarterback last season behind Fernando Mendoza and Alberto Mendoza, and he has served as the backup this year.
In two seasons at Indiana, Wilson has completed five of six passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and he has added five rushing attempts for 51 yards and a score. At Old Dominion in 2023, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound quarterback appeared in all 12 games, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 2,149 yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions while also running 130 times for 289 yards and four touchdowns.
Indiana’s next game comes Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington against Minnesota on Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
ET, with CBS carrying the broadcast. ESPN's "College GameDay" will also be in Bloomington.

Indiana Faces A New Kind Of Pressure In Huge Minnesota Matchup
Memorial Stadium is set for a bigger spotlight than usual when Indiana hosts Minnesota, with ESPNs College GameDay on hand for a matchup that suddenly carries the feel of a showcase game. The Hoosiers enter at 7-1 and, on paper, have the edge against a Golden Gophers team coached by P.J. Fleck that arrives with a 5-2 record of its own.
For Indiana, the noise around the game is part of the challenge now. The Hoosiers have earned the kind of attention that comes with being favored by odds and predictive models, but the stakes are no longer just about staying in the win column. With the weather also in the mix on game day, this one has the ingredients of a test that goes beyond the standings and into how Indiana handles the pressure of being the featured team. [Read more 🡒]
Indiana Gets A Josh Hoover Update Fans Needed Before Minnesota
Curt Cignetti offered a reassuring update on Josh Hoover as Indiana turns its attention to Minnesota, saying the quarterbacks injury is expected to improve in time for the next game. Its a timely bit of news for a team that has otherwise come through a physical stretch in pretty good shape, even as the grind of recent games has been felt on both sides of the ball.
Indianas defense has continued to do its job by keeping opponents out of the red zone when it matters most, and the special teams also drew praise after Billy Gowers and Nico Radicic stood out in the Michigan game. With that kind of week-to-week stability, the Hoosiers can at least enter the Minnesota matchup with a clearer picture of the pieces around Hoover, even if his final status still bears watching. Indiana Starters Leave Hoosiers With A Real Debate Before Opening Night
Indianas exhibition win over Western Kentucky offered a useful first look at a team still sorting itself out before opening night. The Hoosiers trailed in the second half at the Ford Center, then leaned on a strong bench rally to flip the game and come away with a 79-74 victory. Three freshmen played a major role in the closing stretch, giving Indiana a glimpse of the kind of depth it may need as the real games begin.
The bigger takeaway may have been how much the result seemed to tilt once the reserves got involved. Western Kentucky got a huge night from Teagan Moore, who scored 30 points, but Indianas defense still managed to keep the Hilltoppers to 36.9% shooting overall. With the starters leaving the exhibition with some real questions still hanging, the Hoosiers now have a decision to make about how they want to line up when the season opens. [Read more 🡒]
