Indiana Football Keeps Finding A Way As Bloomington Momentum Builds

As fall sports heat up, Indiana University celebrates victories across football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball, promising an exciting season ahead for Hoosiers fans.

Indiana had a busy weekend, and the Hoosiers came out of it with wins across the board and a basketball date circled on the calendar.

The biggest sweat came from football, where Indiana’s title defense hit its first real test and barely stayed upright. After cruising past North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky, the Hoosiers had to grind through Northwestern in Friday night’s Big Ten opener. The Wildcats made life difficult from start to finish, but Indiana found enough when it mattered and escaped with a 29-23 win to move to 4-0.

Now the schedule turns to the first road trip of the season. Indiana heads to Piscataway this Saturday night to take on Rutgers, which enters at 1-3.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.

On the hardwood, Indiana basketball is getting closer to the public eye. The program announced that its Cream and Crimson scrimmage will be held on Oct. 2 at Assembly Hall.

The intrasquad event is set for 6 p.m. ET, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m.

ET. It’s open to the public, and an autograph session will follow once the scrimmage ends.

That comes after Indiana already got one tune-up in Bloomington. In July, the Hoosiers beat Canada’s Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf 98-64 in an exhibition game before the FISU America Games in Peru. Indiana went 4-0 and won the gold medal, while Alabama transfer forward Aiden Sherrell was named Tournament MVP after averaging 14.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game.

Soccer kept rolling, too. Indiana’s men entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the country and stayed unbeaten with a 2-1 win over Penn State on Friday afternoon in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are now 8-0-2 and will face Maryland this Friday at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Volleyball rounded out the weekend with another clean result. Indiana beat Maryland in straight sets on Saturday to improve to 9-2 and extend its winning streak to seven. The Hoosiers are 2-0 in conference play and 4-0 at home, and they’re back in action Thursday at Wisconsin.

Indiana Fans Have A New Recruiting Weekend To Obsess Over

Chase Branham, the future Indiana guard, is spending part of the fall in Las Vegas at the Wootten 150 basketball camp, giving Hoosier fans another chance to watch a name already tied to the program. He is hardly the only recruit on the radar, either, with several other Indiana targets taking part in the Border League event and adding to a busy stretch on the recruiting calendar.

Darius Wabbington is among the prospects drawing attention, and his official visit to Bloomington has kept Indiana in the conversation as he sorts through his college options. For a fan base always tracking the next class, this weekend offers plenty to monitor, with familiar recruiting names in action and more chances for the Hoosiers to stay visible with top-end talent. Indianas First Road Test Suddenly Comes With A Thin Margin For Error

Indianas first road test of the season already had the feel of a measuring-stick game, and the injury report only sharpened the edges. Starting running back Turbo Richard and linebacker Rolijah Hardy are listed as probable for Saturdays matchup at Rutgers after getting banged up last week, which is important news for a Hoosiers team that wants to keep its early momentum intact away from home.

There are still a few moving parts, though, with cornerback A.J. Harris and running back Sean Cuono among the Indiana players listed as questionable or out. Rutgers is dealing with its own uncertainty, including starting running back Antwan Raymond being listed as questionable, so this one could come down to depth and who is healthiest when kickoff arrives. Rutgers Gave USC A Real Fight And Indiana Fans Should Notice

Rutgers opened its 2026 season with a loss to UMass and still sits at 1-3, but the record does not tell the whole story of how this team has played lately. In back-to-back games against Boston College and USC, Rutgers showed it could hang with quality opponents, leaning on quarterback Dylan Lonergan, running back Antwan Raymond and wide receiver KJ Duff to keep pressure on defenses and make the Scarlet Knights far more competitive than their overall mark suggests.

For Indiana fans watching the Big Ten landscape, that kind of fight matters. Rutgers showing against USC offered a clear reminder that a struggling record does not always mean an easy matchup, especially when a team has enough playmakers to turn a game into a test from start to finish. The deeper breakdown of how Rutgers pushed the Trojans underscores why opponents have to prepare for more than just the standings when they face a team with that kind of recent tape. [Read more 🡒]
