Kirk Herbstreit is betting big on Notre Dame.
On The Pat McAfee Show, the ESPN College GameDay analyst made the Fighting Irish his pick to beat Indiana in the 2027 College Football Playoff National Championship, while also naming Ohio State and Georgia as teams he expects to reach the semifinal round.
“I’ve got Notre Dame playing Indiana in the national championship,” Herbstreit said. “I got Notre Dame winning it all over Indiana in a national championship.
I got Ohio State and Georgia both getting into the playoff, in the final four. But I got Notre Dame and Indiana advancing.”
Pat McAfee noted that Herbstreit is not the only ESPN voice backing the Irish. Rece Davis has also picked Notre Dame to win the national title this season.
Herbstreit’s case starts with the shape of Notre Dame’s path. Because the Irish are an FBS independent, they do not have to deal with a conference championship game in December, and he believes that gives them a major advantage.
“They got three games, and they don’t have a conference championship game,” Herbstreit said, implying Notre Dame only faces three competitive opponents this season. “They’re going to walk at least into the playoff.”
He also put quarterback CJ Carr in the center of the national title forecast, saying the signal-caller will win the Heisman Trophy after taking over the starting job in 2025.
“That guy right there is going to win the Heisman Trophy,” Herbstreit said, referring to Carr. “So I’m all in on Notre Dame this year.
I think this is the year that they’ve recruited well. They’ve got some experience at receiver.”
Herbstreit pointed to the roster as another reason for confidence, including junior cornerback Leonard Moore, who is coming off a unanimous All-American season in 2025 and enters the year as one of the top returning defenders in the country.
“This is a very talented team,” Herbstreit said. “And I think they got a bit of a chip on their shoulder from what happened to them a year ago. So I think it’s a real deal.”
The schedule also fits the argument. Notre Dame missed the Playoff a year ago despite finishing the regular season with a strong record, a call that athletic director Pete Bevacqua has since described as controversial. That won’t be an issue in 2026, since Notre Dame secured a guarantee from the Playoff selection committee that it will get an automatic bid if it finishes in the top 12 of the final rankings.
The Irish’s 2026 slate includes road games at Purdue, North Carolina and Syracuse, plus home matchups with Michigan State, Miami and Boston College. They also face SMU and travel to BYU on Oct. 17, a game McAfee singled out as a major test.
“BYU is a big one,” McAfee said.
Herbstreit also flagged Notre Dame’s neutral-site meeting with Navy as another spot to watch.
“And Navy is a little bit of a tricky game,” Herbstreit said.
Notre Dame opens the season Sept. 6 against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, and Herbstreit believes that matchup begins a run that can carry the Irish all the way to the top.
