Kaelon Black didn’t need long to make his case in San Francisco.
The former Hoosier, drafted by the 49ers in the third round with the 90th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, arrived in camp with momentum and carried it straight into Week 1. After earning a spot on the 53-man roster and opening the season as Christian McCaffrey’s backup, Black got his first real NFL test Thursday night against the Rams in Australia and handled it well.
He finished his debut with 65 rushing yards on 14 carries, good for 4.6 yards per attempt, and added one reception for 5 yards. Black was active from the start, ran with purpose all night, and helped San Francisco roll to a 27-7 win.
What stood out most was the workload. Black actually logged more carries than McCaffrey, 14-10, and played 44% of the 49ers’ offensive snaps. That’s no small thing for a rookie backing up one of the league’s most important offensive pieces.
San Francisco has spent plenty of time trying to identify a reliable second option behind McCaffrey, and Black’s first outing at least gives them something real to think about. After the game, he spoke about appreciating the opportunity in front of him.

That role matters even more because McCaffrey’s workload has been such a major part of San Francisco’s offense. He was healthy last season and piled up more than 450 total touches across the regular season and playoffs, then missed time in training camp, which opened the door for Black to get work with the first team. With that kind of usage behind McCaffrey, having someone trustworthy in the No. 2 spot is a big deal, and Black looked ready for it in his first game.
McCaffrey finished the opener with 68 yards on 10 carries and 5 catches for 20 yards. How the 49ers split the backfield work from here will be worth watching, especially as McCaffrey’s opportunities likely rise in the coming weeks. Even so, Black appears set for a meaningful role rather than a brief cameo.
For Indiana fans, it’s another encouraging sign from a back who was part of a huge season in Bloomington. Black and Roman Hemby formed one of the nation’s best running back duos last year, both topping 1,000 rushing yards. Black led the Hoosiers with 10 rushing touchdowns and averaged 5.6 yards per carry.
Now he’s already showing he can bring that production to the NFL stage.
