Kaelon Black didn’t just show up in his NFL debut Thursday night - he carved out a real role.
The former Hoosier ran 14 times for 65 yards and added a 5-yard catch, helping power the 49ers to a 27-7 win over the Rams. For a third-round pick in the season opener, that was a much bigger workload than plenty of people probably expected. Black handled it well and made the most of every chance he got.
What makes his performance so interesting is where it sits on San Francisco’s depth chart. Black opened Week 1 as Christian McCaffrey’s backup, but the two split the work almost evenly against Los Angeles. Black had 14 rushing opportunities to McCaffrey’s 10, and once the passing game was included, both finished with 15 total touches.
For fantasy managers and McCaffrey believers alike, that kind of split might raise an eyebrow. But it could also be exactly what the 49ers need.
McCaffrey’s career has been shaped by injuries since 2020. He played just 3 games that year, then 7 in 2021 and 4 in 2024.
Now in his age-30 season, he’s coming off a massive workload, with career-highs in rushing attempts (311) and total touches (413) last season. Including the postseason, he topped 450 total touches.
That’s a lot to ask of any back, especially one with McCaffrey’s injury history.
Black gives San Francisco a way to ease off the gas without taking McCaffrey off the field. If he keeps producing the way he did in Week 1, the 49ers won’t have to lean so heavily on McCaffrey to carry the offense every week. Black may not keep seeing an even split, but a steady role could go a long way toward keeping McCaffrey fresh.
That matters because when McCaffrey is not overloaded, he can still look like the dynamic weapon the 49ers want him to be. His explosiveness in the running game and passing game is what separates him, and the opener suggested that a lighter load can help bring that back.
The 49ers will want to keep finding ways to preserve that spark early and often in 2026, and Black may be the piece that makes it possible. Whatever his exact role becomes, Thursday night made one thing clear: he can step in right away and produce. Against one of the NFL’s best defenses, Black delivered a sensational debut and helped the 49ers roll to a 20-point win over a division rival.
Hoosier fans have every reason to be excited about what comes next.
