Floridas Ranking Hit Looks Bad But One Result May Save Them

As the dust settles on an eventful Week 5, the new AP Top 25 sees key shifts, including significant movements for several unbeaten teams and setbacks for previous top contenders.

AP voters are headed into Week 6 with a board that doesn’t need a full reset, but it still has plenty of moving parts. Only three ranked teams lost last weekend, yet two of those defeats came from programs sitting near the top, which gives the poll some room for shuffling even without a complete shakeup.

At the very top, Texas should keep hold of No. 1 despite sitting idle. The Longhorns could lose a few of their 62 first-place votes to Georgia after the Bulldogs handled Vanderbilt, but Texas still has that win over Ohio State in its pocket, and that should keep the Longhorns safely on top.

Georgia is set to stay at No. 2 after a shaky opening stretch against Vanderbilt gave way to a much cleaner finish. The Bulldogs allowed a backup quarterback to guide two long touchdown drives early, then locked things down after halftime and didn’t give up a point in the second half. Next up is a trip to Alabama.

Notre Dame should remain third after surviving a tougher-than-expected night at North Carolina. The Irish were favored by 21 and still won by 11, with CJ Carr stepping in to finish critical touchdown drives when the defense kept the game tighter than expected.

Miami’s road win over Clemson should keep the Hurricanes at No. 4. The 41-13 result may not carry the same punch it once did, but Miami’s defense delivered while dealing with injuries, and Mark Fletcher helped drive another strong rushing effort.

Alabama looks ready to climb again after pounding Mississippi State and becoming the first FBS team since OU in 2019 to score at least 45 points in each of its first five games. The Crimson Tide are averaging 50 points per game, and if they beat Georgia next week, AP voters could put them at No. 1.

Ohio State, meanwhile, should slide a bit after a strong win at Iowa, even though Jeremiah Smith now owns the Buckeyes’ program record for receiving touchdowns with 36 catches in his career. The issue for the poll may be that Alabama’s win came against a tougher-looking opponent.

Indiana also made a loud statement. Turbo Richard rushed for 200 yards, and the Hoosiers had two 100-yard receivers in a road win over Rutgers that should keep them moving up.

BYU’s narrow win at TCU should hold up well enough to keep the Cougars near the top of the Big 12, though the injury to rusher LJ Martin is something to watch. Bear Bachmeier scored two rushing touchdowns to get BYU over the line and keep the Cougars atop the league standings.

Utah has a strong case to stay in the top 10 after an idle week. The Utes still own a two-touchdown win at Iowa State and have been one of the country’s most efficient teams, with only one game left on the schedule in which they may not be favored.

Ole Miss should stay in the top 10 as well after resting this weekend. The Rebels are trying to avoid falling below .500 in SEC play as they head to Vanderbilt in Week 6.

Texas Tech remains the highest-ranked Big 12 team, though the Red Raiders didn’t make it look that way against Colorado. They needed a comeback to stop an upset bid, and the offense still hasn’t quite looked like a top-tier unit.

Oregon should continue rising after taking apart USC on the road with backup quarterback Dylan Raiola. The Ducks were off last Saturday and return next week for a matchup with newly ranked UCLA.

USC’s defense helped the Trojans survive Washington at home in a close one, thanks in part to a fumble return touchdown and some much-needed stops. Now comes a tough stretch with road games at Penn State and Wisconsin.

Tennessee earned a win over Auburn behind a huge day from DeSean Bishop, who ran for more than 200 yards and scored three times. The Vols still have a quarterback situation to sort out after Faizon Brandon was benched early.

Missouri should get a boost after handling Florida. Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards, and the Tigers’ run defense did enough to shut down the Gators on the ground and back up the confidence many voters already had in them.

Florida’s loss at Missouri won’t drop the Gators too hard because of the win over Ole Miss, but getting beaten by four touchdowns while failing to stop anything in the air or get much going on the ground was a rough night.

SMU should move up a little after a nine-point win over Boston College. It wasn’t flashy, but it was enough.

Houston also survives with a win, though it was a shaky one. The Cougars didn’t score in the first half against UCF, then Conner Weigman turned it around with three second-half touchdowns.

Mississippi State is likely headed down after giving up 56 points at home to Alabama, even if the Bulldogs still have wins over Missouri and Minnesota to lean on.

Boise State keeps its place among the Group of Six leaders after beating Utah State in its Pac-12 debut, with a top-25-ranked ground game helping the Broncos stay in the mix.

Kentucky needed a comeback and a two-point conversion to beat South Carolina on the road, but at 4-1, the Wildcats should still inch upward.

UCLA was off, but the Bruins now return to a major test against Oregon with an undefeated record on the line.

Pittsburgh may be the beneficiary of Iowa’s loss to Ohio State, since the Panthers stayed unbeaten with a win at Virginia Tech. That victory came with a cost, though, after quarterback Mason Heintschel tore his ACL.

Oklahoma State was idle and should stay put for now, with UCF next on the schedule.

At the bottom of the projected poll, AP voters could swap Iowa out for Pittsburgh. The Hawkeyes’ loss to Ohio State opens the door, while Pitt’s unbeaten record and road win at Virginia Tech give the Panthers a case to slide in.

Indianas Latest AP Ranking Just Sparked A New Disrespect Debate

Indianas climb in the polls hit another familiar snag this week, with the latest Associated Press ranking slotting the Hoosiers seventh even after a 32-point win over Rutgers and a 21-game winning streak that keeps rolling along. The contrast with the Coaches Poll was hard to miss, since Indiana stayed at fifth there, and it only added to the feeling around the program that its rsum is not being treated the same way as some of the other teams clustered near the top.

Alabamas rise to sixth after a dominant win over Mississippi State only sharpened the debate, especially for a Hoosiers team that has done just about everything asked of it on the field. For Indiana, the number beside its name has become its own weekly talking point, and the gap between what the team is doing and where it is being placed is starting to feel like part of the story every time the rankings come out. Curt Cignetti Revealed What Stood Out Behind Indianas Rutgers Win

Curt Cignetti had plenty to point to after Indianas 47-15 win over Rutgers, and the postgame conversation started with the defense. The Hoosiers were disruptive and steady on that side of the ball, giving the offense room to work while the running backs drew attention for their health status and the way the staff managed touches in the game. Cignetti also touched on special teams and the atmosphere around the matchup, making it clear this was one of those wins that revealed more than the final score.

Rutgers still made Indiana earn it for stretches, and Cignetti acknowledged both the Scarlet Knights competitiveness and what Greg Schiano has accomplished there. For Indiana, the larger takeaway was how the performance fit together across the board, from the defensive effort to the offensive approach and the way the team handled the games flow. There was enough encouragement in the result to carry forward, even with a few longer-term questions still worth watching. [Read more 🡒]

Indiana Left Fans One Tough Choice After Rutgers Blowout

Indianas 47-15 rout of Rutgers at SHI Stadium gave the Hoosiers plenty to celebrate, but it also left fans with a familiar postgame problem: trying to sort through a long list of standout performances and decide which ones mattered most. The offense piled up big numbers and the defense kept Rutgers from ever finding its footing, which made the teams player-of-the-game conversation more crowded than usual.

Turbo Richards 204 rushing yards put him squarely in the spotlight, while Jamari Sharpes coverage work helped define the defensive side of the win. With both units making a strong case, Indiana is leaving the final call to its fans, who get to weigh in on who deserves the game ball after one of the seasons most convincing victories. [Read more 🡒]
