Fernando Mendoza, the former IU football quarterback, is creating quite the buzz ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. With a Heisman Trophy and a national championship under his belt, Mendoza's blend of elite skills and calm demeanor makes him a prime target for any team. However, it seems the Las Vegas Raiders are in the best position to snag this top prospect with their No. 1 overall pick.
Other teams, though, aren't backing down without a fight. The idea of trading up to secure Mendoza is floating around, but given the current football landscape, it's unlikely the Raiders will relinquish their golden ticket to a franchise quarterback.
Being the top pick often means joining a team with a less-than-stellar track record. The Raiders, Jets, and Browns are often seen as challenging environments for quarterbacks. But what if Mendoza has reservations about joining the Raiders?
During a recent interview at the NFL Draft Combine, Mendoza shared some unusual advice he received. One team suggested he "get arrested" to potentially drop in the draft order.
Mendoza, however, isn't buying into such antics. "Hopefully, I don’t get arrested," he quipped, clearly not taking the suggestion seriously.
Despite the Raiders' struggles over the years, Mendoza finds the prospect of joining them appealing. Born in Boston and raised in Miami, he grew up idolizing Tom Brady, who now holds a minority ownership stake in the Raiders. The chance to be mentored by Brady is a dream for Mendoza.
"Who hasn’t admired Tom Brady?" Mendoza mused.
"To potentially learn from the greatest quarterback of all time would be incredible. I’m all about learning, and having a mentor like him would be meaningful."
As the draft approaches, the connection between Mendoza and the Raiders seems destined. If everything goes as expected, Mendoza will hear his name called first by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Until then, Mendoza remains grounded. "Right now, I’m unemployed," he said with a lightheartedness that belies the pressure of being a top draft prospect. He's just another young talent on the brink of an exciting career.
