Darian DeVries Is Chasing A Recruit Indiana Fans Can't Ignore

Can Indiana's coach Darian DeVries edge out rivals and secure the game-changing commitment of 5-star recruit Darius Wabbington?

Darian DeVries has a real shot at landing the kind of recruit that changes the conversation in Bloomington.

Five-star center Darius Wabbington has been on Indiana’s radar for months, and the Hoosiers are still very much alive in his recruitment. The 2027 prospect is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 12 overall player and the No. 2 center in the country, and he’s now trimmed his list to three schools: Indiana, Illinois and Arizona.

Wabbington was on campus for an official visit to Bloomington on September 3 and took in IU’s 52-16 win over North Texas while he was there. That trip appears to have mattered. Indiana remains in the hunt as the decision gets closer, and with only three finalists left, the race is entering its final stretch.

For DeVries, this is about more than just adding another name to the board. He’s still looking for that first five-star commitment at Indiana, and Wabbington would be the one to get him there. DeVries has already made progress in building out the roster, but the signature recruiting win is still missing.

The emphasis on the frontcourt has been obvious all offseason. Indiana added 6'11" power forward Aiden Sherrell from Alabama and 7'2" center Samet Yigitoglu from SMU through the portal.

Yigitoglu gives the Hoosiers the true center they lacked last season, while Sherrell brings a versatile, all-around game that could make him a major piece right away. If everything clicks, that duo has a chance to be one of the strongest frontcourt pairings in college basketball.

The recruiting push hasn’t stopped there. DeVries also picked up a commitment from 7-foot German center Felix Kiehlneker, who Peegs.com says is the No. 5 overall prospect in Germany aged 19 or younger. Add it all up, and the message is clear: Indiana is loading up on size, athleticism and versatility up front.

Wabbington fits that plan. At 6'10" and 245 pounds, he brings the kind of frame that plays in the paint, but he’s not just a back-to-the-basket big.

He can handle the ball with guard-like ability, rebound on both ends and score off the dribble. He also has the range to knock down shots from the outside, which keeps defenses from camping in the lane.

That’s why this recruitment matters so much for Indiana. A commitment from Wabbington would give DeVries a major boost on the trail and help push the Hoosiers back into the mix with the elite programs they’ve slipped behind in recent years.

There’s no commitment date yet, but with three schools left and Indiana still standing, that announcement may not be far off. For now, the Hoosiers are waiting to see whether DeVries can close.

Indiana Suddenly Has A Backfield Problem At The Worst Time

Indianas backfield is suddenly in a precarious spot heading into its Week 5 matchup with Rutgers, and the timing could hardly be worse. Khobie Martin is officially out with a broken forearm, while Turbo Richard is still dealing with a high ankle sprain, leaving the Hoosiers to sort through a running back room that is already under strain.

Lee Beebe Jr. and Sean Cuono both landed on the questionable list on the latest availability report, which only adds to the uncertainty. With multiple names in flux, Indiana may have to lean heavily on depth and improvisation just to keep the ground game on schedule. [Read more 🡒]

Indiana May Need These Starters Most To Stay Unbeaten At Rutgers

As Indiana gets ready for a Week 5 trip to Rutgers, the Hoosiers are staring at a familiar early-season problem: injuries in the running back room could force the offense to lean even harder on its other staples. That puts extra importance on quarterback Josh Hoover and offensive tackle Carter Smith, two players Indiana may need to steady things if the ground game is less than full strength.

The other side of the equation is just as demanding. Rutgers has a top target in wide receiver KJ Duff, and cornerback Jamari Sharpe is expected to have a key role in trying to slow him down. In a game where every matchup feels a little sharper because of the injuries Indiana is carrying, the Hoosiers may find themselves asking their starters to cover more than one job. [Read more 🡒]

Indianas Unbeaten Start Is Fueling A Huge Draft Rise For Three Hoosiers

Indianas unbeaten start has done more than keep the Hoosiers in the conversation on the field. It has also pushed three of their key players into an early spotlight on the draft circuit, with ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid placing wide receiver Charlie Becker, wideout Nick Marsh and offensive lineman Carter Smith among his top 50 prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft.

Becker comes in as Reids No. 8 overall prospect thanks to his size, speed and contested-catch ability, while Marsh lands at No. 26 for his physicality and route running. Smith checks in at No. 44 as a steady presence up front, a sign that Indianas unbeaten run is being built on more than one breakout star and that NFL evaluators are taking notice well before the 2026 season is over.
