Darian DeVries Eyes Diamond-In-The-Rough Star To Help Fix Hoosiers

Darian DeVries looks to revitalize Indiana Hoosiers basketball by reuniting with former standout guard Colby Garland through the transfer portal.

The Indiana Hoosiers wrapped up their 2025-26 season with a tough stretch, finishing 1-6 in their last seven games and missing the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row. Now, head coach Darian DeVries faces the challenge of replacing a whopping 78% of the minutes played and 84.1% of the scoring from last season. It’s clear that the transfer portal will be a key resource for DeVries as he looks to rebuild the roster.

Players nationwide are already lining up to enter the portal when it opens next month, and DeVries has his eye on some intriguing prospects. One standout target is San Jose State guard Colby Garland, who previously played under DeVries at Drake during the 2023-24 season. Given their past connection, Garland could be a perfect fit for Indiana.

A reunion between DeVries and Garland seems like a natural move for the Hoosiers next season. Garland, a 6'1" guard from Magnolia, Arkansas, earned Third Team All-Mountain West honors this past season, averaging 20.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game for San Jose State.

Garland's journey through college basketball has been notable. Before his time at San Jose State, he played for Drake and Longwood, making significant contributions at each stop.

At Drake, he appeared in all 31 games, averaging 5.7 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He then moved to Longwood, where he started 28 of 32 games, averaging 12 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game.

In total, Garland has played in 92 collegiate games with 57 starts, and he’s just had the best season of his career. With Indiana in need of scoring, Garland might be at the top of DeVries' wish list this offseason.

Garland is known for his scoring efficiency, boasting a 49.0% shooting percentage last season. He’s also improved his three-point shooting each year, hitting 37.2% from beyond the arc this season-a stat that would have ranked third on the Hoosiers.
