The incident involving UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley and official Roger Ayers continues to capture attention. It all started with a playful forehead bump during a game, and Hurley recently shared his perspective on the Triple Option podcast. When asked by co-host Mark Ingram II about the incident, Hurley explained that his relationship with Ayers has always been amicable.
Hurley described Ayers as an easygoing official, noting, "I thought he was coming over to chest bump me to celebrate the shot." This light-hearted interaction came during the celebration of Braylon Mullins' 3-pointer.
UConn's Alex Karaban also weighed in on the situation during an appearance on Wake Up Barstool. He mentioned that Hurley had brought it up with the team, adding humorously, "I do plan on talking to him today about it, maybe recreating the moment as a joke in practice."
Despite the viral nature of the clip, Ayers chose not to issue a technical foul, even though the incident occurred with just 0.4 seconds left in their victory against Duke in the Elite Eight. ESPN's Seth Greenberg spoke with both Ayers and Hurley, with Ayers downplaying the event, saying, "Nothing happened."
Seth Davis, Editor in Chief of Hoops IQ, clarified the contact rule, emphasizing that a technical foul is warranted only if a coach or player makes disrespectful or intimidating contact with an official. Ayers determined that Hurley's actions did not meet these criteria.
Reflecting on a separate incident, Hurley discussed his ejection in the regular-season finale against Marquette, where tensions ran high, leading to a fine from the Big East Conference. Hurley candidly admitted, "When I was on my man’s neck, screaming into his neck, I mean, that was a guy that’s like, coming right up to the line and losing his mind."
Through it all, Hurley's interactions with officials remain a blend of intensity and humor, showcasing the passionate dynamics of college basketball.
