Indiana receiver Nick Marsh made the most of his return to the starting lineup Saturday, turning in his best game yet as a Hoosier in a 38-0 win over Western Kentucky.
The Michigan State transfer caught seven passes for 81 yards, nearly matching what he produced over Indiana’s first two games. Marsh was targeted a team-high 10 times, and his numbers could have been even better if quarterback Josh Hoover had not overthrown him on a wide-open vertical route down the sideline just before halftime.
His big day came after he was held out of the first series against Howard last week.
Curt Cignetti initially said Marsh sat so Shazz Preston could get more reps, but after the shutout of the Hilltoppers, the Indiana coach gave a slightly different explanation.
"I mean, he didn't start last week, there was a reason," Cignetti said of Marsh. "And then, we didn't really decide until yesterday who would start there."
That reasoning lines up with comments Cignetti made Thursday on his coaches show, where he pointed to Marsh’s practice habits.
"Nick's new, and he's still learning," Cignetti said. "And, you know, we're still trying to, like, work some kinks out, day in, day out, in terms of practice standards."
Marsh has already had one other run-in with Cignetti this season. During Indiana’s first spring practice, he showed up wearing gold cleats and was sent back to the locker room to change.
"He learned what getting your ass ripped is all about," Cignetti said then. "I don't know if that happened to him very often at Michigan State.
That was before practice started. That was a wake-up call."
Cignetti has praised Marsh’s ability since then, including at Big Ten media days and again during fall camp. Marsh showed that upside immediately on Indiana’s first drive of the season against North Texas, when he hauled in an impressive one-handed touchdown.
Saturday offered another reminder of what he can bring when everything is clicking. Hoover said the receiver is settling in more and more.
"I think Nick is a guy that's getting more and more comfortable each and every week," Hoover said. "I think Nick's going to have a really big impact. He already has."
