CFB Insider Gives Notre Dame Surprising Nod Over Alabama

Despite an impressive lineup, Alabama's quarterback talent mysteriously misses CBS Sports' top 10 ranking, sparking debate over this glaring omission.

Alabama’s quarterback room has become one of the most intriguing parts of Kalen DeBoer’s roster, even without a starter locked in for 2026.

The battle is still very much open. Redshirt freshman Keelon Russell has been the name most often tied to the top spot, but redshirt junior Austin Mack is right there and will keep pushing him through fall camp.

However it shakes out, the Crimson Tide appear to be in good shape. Russell has already started to pick up dark-horse Heisman Trophy buzz, and Mack brings plenty of talent of his own.

That’s why CBS Sports leaving Alabama out of its Top 10 QB rooms this week raised eyebrows. Blake Brockermeyer released his list, and the Crimson Tide didn’t make the cut.

The rankings went like this: Oregon, Texas, Utah, Ole Miss, Ohio State, LSU, USC, Miami, Houston and Notre Dame.

It’s a curious omission, especially when Alabama’s depth is part of the case. Mack was a 4-star recruit and a Top 100 overall player.

Russell arrived as a 5-star and the No. 2 overall player in his class. Behind them sits 5-star true freshman Jett Thomalla, giving Alabama a level of star power that most programs simply can’t match.

Brockermeyer didn’t explain why Alabama was left off, but the list clearly leaned toward rooms with a proven starter already in place. That’s fair enough if the discussion is about the most established quarterback. It’s a different conversation when the topic is the best quarterback room overall.

If someone wants to argue that Utah’s Devon Dampier is more proven than Mack or Russell, that’s reasonable. But saying Utah has a better quarterback room top to bottom than Alabama is a much tougher sell.

And the real punchline here may come after the season. If Russell or Mack takes control and turns into one of the nation’s better quarterbacks, this list will age badly in a hurry. The loser of the job would still give Alabama what might be the best backup quarterback in the country, and Thomalla makes the third spot look just as loaded.

Alabama has plenty to sort out heading into 2026, but quarterback doesn’t look like one of those problems. The Tide have elite talent at the top, elite depth behind it, and a room that looks far stronger than the latest ranking suggested.

Victor Oladipo Is Still Chasing One More NBA Chance

Victor Oladipo is still trying to carve out one more path back to the NBA, and the former Indiana University star has made it clear he is not treating this like a farewell tour. After spending part of the 2025-26 season in the G League with the Wisconsin Herd, where he appeared in 15 games, the two-time All-Star took to social media to say he remains available for professional opportunities and is ready to keep playing.

The bigger wrinkle is that Oladipo is handling the search himself right now, without an agent, with his family helping him sort through possibilities. For teams looking for a veteran guard who has been through just about everything in a 10-season NBA career with five franchises, the appeal goes beyond scoring, and Oladipo is signaling that he is open to the right fit if a club values winning and mentorship. IU's Rebuilt Roster Faces Its First Real Test Before Peru

Indianas rebuilt roster has spent the summer in open practices, giving the staff an early look at how the pieces fit before the Hoosiers head to Lima, Peru, for the FISU America Games. The workouts have offered a chance to compare the transfers and returning players side by side, and the early signs have pointed to a frontcourt that looks deeper and more balanced than it did a year ago.

Before the trip, IU will get one more chance to sort things out when it hosts Collge Jean-de-Brbeuf on July 15. The schedule for the games in Peru still has not been finalized, but the exhibition should provide a useful checkpoint for a roster that is still being evaluated and a staff that is trying to find out which combinations travel best once the competition starts. UCLA Suddenly Faces A Big Ten Question Indiana Fans Will Notice

UCLAs roster picture for 2026-27 is already drawing attention in Big Ten circles, and Indiana fans have reason to keep an eye on it. Mick Cronins group is shaping up around a mix of holdovers and newcomers, with Trent Perry and Eric Dailey Jr. standing out among the returning pieces while transfers and freshmen are expected to fill out much of the rotation. The overall profile looks balanced and athletic, which is usually enough to make the Bruins a problem once conference play settles in.

The bigger question is whether that balance comes with enough creation and toughness to survive a league schedule. UCLA will need its new backcourt pieces to handle more of the offense, and the front line has to be better on the glass after last seasons rebound numbers left room for growth. The talent is there to be interesting, but the difference between a solid Big Ten team and a dangerous one may come down to how quickly the new faces answer those two concerns. [Read more 🡒]
