Illinois football has plenty of veteran voices in the room, but few carry more weight than Matthew Bailey.
The fifth-year safety from Moline has been one of the defining players of the program for years now, and his latest recognition puts him in line for one of college football’s top defensive honors. Bailey was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list, adding another line to a résumé that already runs deep.
His numbers tell the story of a player who has been everywhere for the Illini. In 39 games, Bailey has piled up 185 total tackles, 15 pass deflections, four interceptions and four forced fumbles. He also owns an Illinois record after making 13 tackles against South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
The awards have followed. Bailey has earned multi-time All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition and has also been named a multi-time All-Big Ten third-team selection.
