The Detroit Lions are moving on from Teddy Bridgewater, and that means the team will be hunting for a veteran arm behind Jared Goff.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Sunday that Bridgewater is stepping away from the team. Asked whether that should be viewed as retirement, Campbell didn’t stamp it one way or the other, but he made clear that’s how it looks right now.
“I think only he can truly answer that, but I feel like this is where it’s at for sure right now,” Campbell said. “This is where it needs to be and where he felt.”
With Bridgewater out, Detroit’s quarterback room suddenly gets thin. The only other passer on the roster is undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer, and Campbell said the Lions plan to bring in a veteran to stabilize the depth chart.
“We like Luke. Luke is growing,” Campbell said.
“Luke is getting better. He just needs reps.
I mean, he needs a million reps. With the reps that he has gotten at this point, he is improved.
So, we like him, but we are going to add somebody, and we’d like to add a veteran quarterback. We’re hoping maybe something happens tomorrow.”
Altmyer may be developing, but Detroit clearly isn’t ready to hand him the full backup job without help. The Lions want experience in the room, especially with Bridgewater now out of the picture.
Campbell also took a moment to salute Bridgewater’s impact, both as a player and as a person. He said their connection goes back years, including time together in New Orleans.
“I’ve known Teddy a long time, and, man, the human being is unbelievable,” Campbell said. “Certainly the player, everything he’s about, the teammate that he is, the way he prepares.
Always played the game up here and had a huge heart. He’s going to be missed.”
