Wagler, the former Illini guard taken No. 5 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, arrived in Los Angeles with the kind of expectations that come with being the face of a rebuild. The Clippers made that pick knowing they were moving toward a new era, one that included the trade of franchise star Kawhi Leonard.
That deal was completed nearly two weeks ago, sending Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. But on Thursday, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the trade is now on hold while the NBA investigates potential cap circumvention involving the Clippers and Leonard through former sponsor Aspiration.

The league has given Toronto the option to wait until the investigation is finished before moving forward, and the Raptors have since said they will do exactly that. Amick also reported that the NBA does not have a firm timeline for the investigation, though it could wrap up in the coming weeks.
For the Clippers, the timing is brutal. Their first Summer League game is supposed to be the introduction to Wagler, but instead the organization is dealing with uncertainty around the Leonard trade before the rookie even gets fully settled in.
Still, Wagler is expected to play Thursday night, and the situation shouldn’t change the basic plan for the franchise. Even if Leonard somehow ends up back on the roster, Wagler would still start in the backcourt, with Leonard sliding to the No. 3 spot.
The bigger picture for Los Angeles is clear: the team needs this to move on quickly and get to the Keaton Wagler era. Depending on how the investigation plays out, Leonard could wind up in a place he doesn’t want to be, and that’s the kind of mess the Clippers are trying to avoid.
For now, Wagler remains the centerpiece. Leonard is the old story. The Clippers just need this one to fade fast.
