Keaton Wagler Stuns Big Ten With Prestigious Freshman Year Honors

Keaton Wagler's remarkable debut season with the Illini earns him top honors in the Big Ten, defying expectations and setting new records.

Keaton Wagler has made quite the entrance into the University of Illinois men’s basketball scene, joining an elite group of players who have left their mark in their freshman year. Standing at 6-foot-6, this guard from Shawnee, Kansas, has been named the 2026 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the first-team All-Big Ten.

His stellar performance this season, averaging 17.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 44.7% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc, puts him in rare company. Only four other Illinois players have achieved this honor since 1986, including names like Corey Bradford and Kofi Cockburn.

Despite being ranked 150th by 247Sports.com and 179th by Rivals.com in the 2025 recruiting class, Wagler has defied expectations. He had just two high-major offers before committing to Illinois under coach Brad Underwood. This season, Wagler is one of only two freshmen nationwide averaging at least 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists, alongside Duke's Cameron Boozer.

Wagler's accolades don’t stop there. He was named to the first-team All-Big Ten by both the league’s coaches and selected media.

Joining him on this prestigious list are Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg, Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz, Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr., Nebraska’s Pryce Sandfort, and Purdue’s Braden Smith. Michigan dominated the individual awards, with Aday Mara taking Defensive Player of the Year and Dusty May earning Coach of the Year.

Wagler has been a consistent force, scoring in double figures in each of the last 23 games and leading the team in scoring 28 times this season. He ranks fifth in the Big Ten for 3-point shooting and has nine 20-point games under his belt, just one shy of the Illini freshman record. With 555 points this season, he has shattered the Illinois freshman scoring record, previously held by Cory Bradford and Kasparas Jakucionis.

One of Wagler’s standout moments came during a two-week period where he scored 34 points against Wisconsin and an incredible 46 points at Purdue. His performance at Nebraska, scoring 28 points with 23 in the second half, further solidified his status as a top freshman talent. He joins Kiwane Garris as one of only two freshmen in Illini history with multiple 30-point games.

Wagler has also earned a conference-leading six Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, second only to Kofi Cockburn’s seven. His name is on the Naismith Trophy Late-Season Team, and he’s featured on watch lists for the Wooden Award and Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award. Recognized as the Oscar Robertson High-Major Player of the Month for January, Wagler is poised for potential All-America honors.

In addition to Wagler’s achievements, Illinois senior guard Kylan Boswell was named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team, and David Mirkovic joined Wagler on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team. Mirkovic is making his mark too, averaging 13.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, with seven double-doubles to his name. Boswell, a seasoned player, leads the team in career points and has consistently delivered, with eight 20-point games and 39 double-digit scoring games throughout his time at Illinois.

Wagler’s debut season is one for the books, and his future looks just as promising. With such a strong start, he’s setting the stage for what could be a legendary college career.
