Illinois is deep into the second week of training camp, and the picture is starting to sharpen now that the pads are on and the depth chart is no longer just a loose outline.
The team hasn’t been open to reporters since Monday, and with practice closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, the next real window into camp comes Thursday at the on-campus media day, when every player on the roster will be available.
One of the more interesting developments so far involves Ismael Kante, who appears to be finding a better home in Illinois’ new 3-3-5 defense. New linebackers coach Roger Cooper made that clear early in the spring, pulling Kante aside in a stretch line and delivering a direct message.
"I said, 'I'm counting on you, man. You've got to be great. You've got to be one of my guys,'" Cooper said.
That kind of confidence matters, especially for a player who has logged just 55 career defensive snaps for the Illini and spent last season bouncing between inside and outside linebacker. Kante, who was the No. 1-rated JCUO linebacker in the Class of 2025 according to 247Sports, sounds like he felt the shift immediately.
"As soon as he told me that, it's like something light up inside me," Kante said. "I'm like, 'Oh yeah.
Let's do it then. I'm ready.
Coach me up, coach me up hard and get me ready for whatever comes my way.'"
How Illinois ultimately uses him is still up in the air, but he’s getting work at both outside linebacker spots - field and boundary - while also learning some of the MIKE role. That spot is currently held by Daniel Brown.
Elsewhere in camp, Hankins has been one of the names drawing attention as the Illini continue sorting out roles and reps.
