Indiana’s push for elite 2028 talent just got a lot more complicated.
Darian DeVries and his staff have already moved on to the next wave of recruiting after getting Indiana’s 2026 class on campus, and the Hoosiers have been tracking 4-star combo guard Chase Branham in the 2027 group. But one of the biggest names on their 2028 board is no longer in that class at all.
AJ Williams, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound small forward from Stockbridge, Georgia, has reclassified into the 2027 class, according to multiple reports. Williams had been ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2028 cycle, and his move instantly tightens an already crowded recruitment.
The attention around Williams was already heavy. He holds more than 25 offers, with Duke, North Carolina, Auburn, BYU, Kansas, Georgia and others in the mix. Joe Tipton reported on August 4, 2026, that Williams told Rivals he was making the jump to 2027.
What makes Williams such a striking prospect is that the move did not send him tumbling down the rankings the way reclassifications often do. He is no longer the top player in the 2027 class, but 247Sports still has him as a Top-5 prospect. That kind of hold in the rankings is not the norm, and it only reinforces how highly regarded he is.
Indiana has been involved for a while. The Hoosiers were among the first Power 4 programs to offer Williams, doing so in July of last year. He was also one of the earliest players to receive an offer from DeVries after he took over the program in March 2025.
Still, staying in the hunt will be the hard part. Williams’ list of suitors includes major national programs, and Georgia is a team to watch given that he’s a native of the state. Several reports have also pointed to Duke as a serious contender.
Williams is expected to begin lining up official visits this fall, and the next step in his recruitment will be worth watching closely. Indiana would love to get him to Bloomington, but with his stock rising and the competition already fierce, that will be a tough ask.
