The Illinois Fighting Illini wrestling team wrapped up their Big Ten Championships with a solid sixth-place finish, highlighted by Kannon Webster's impressive third-place performance at 157 pounds. Eight Illini wrestlers punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships, but the weekend wasn't without its drama.
The big story was the end of Lucas Byrd's remarkable 29-match winning streak. The reigning national champ faced an unexpected setback in the 133-pound quarterfinals, falling to Purdue's Blake Boarman, who was the 10th seed.
Despite this upset, Byrd bounced back to defeat Boarman in their rematch for fifth place after a tough loss to Iowa’s Drake Ayala. Byrd's journey to defend his national title just got a bit steeper.
Spencer Moore snagged the last automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships by winning the ninth-place match at 125 pounds. At 165 pounds, Braeden Scoles clinched his berth after a medical forfeit in the seventh-place match.
Michael Gioffre's two wins in the championship bracket at 149 pounds earned him a sixth-place finish and a spot at nationals. Heavyweight Luke Luffman and 174-pounder Colin Kelly also secured their places by finishing eighth and seventh, respectively.
Chris Moore and Kannon Webster rounded out the qualifiers for Illinois. Moore wrestled to a nail-biting overtime finish at 184 pounds, while Webster claimed a decisive victory over Ohio State’s Brandon Cannon to take third place at 157 pounds, proving himself a formidable force in his weight class.
The Illini tallied 78 points, a step down from their triple-digit score last year. However, they managed to outpace Minnesota, a traditional powerhouse experiencing a down year. Positioned in the third tier of teams alongside Iowa and Michigan, Illinois found themselves trailing behind Nebraska and Ohio State in tier two, with Penn State remaining the dominant force in the Big Ten and the favorite for the NCAA title.
