Illinois is walking into a tough one against No. 7 Ohio State, but the first number out of Vegas has plenty of people raising an eyebrow. The Illini are listed as 27.5-point underdogs, a spread that puts them just shy of a four-touchdown gap and makes this matchup look far more lopsided than Illinois’ offense has shown so far this season.
That line stands out because Illinois has not been a pushover on that side of the ball. Through three games, the Illini are averaging 39 points per game, and Katin Houser has quickly become the engine of the offense after stepping in for Luke Altmyer, who had run the unit for the last two seasons. Houser has thrown for 758 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions, while also adding 50 rushing yards and a score on 10 carries.
Collin Dixon has been just as important, and maybe even more eye-catching. He climbed from 13th to sixth in the country in receiving yards with 367, leaving him only 33 yards behind Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith. Dixon also took the national lead in touchdowns after adding two more against Southern Illinois, giving him seven on the season.
Illinois has also gotten a boost on the ground, especially in the win over Southern Illinois, where Aidan Laughery and Ca’Lil Valentine both made the most of their opportunities. That production makes the early spread feel aggressive, especially for a conference game.
The Buckeyes still bring plenty of firepower to the table, and being favored is no surprise. Ohio State is ranked No. 7 and remains a difficult offense to slow down.
But the defense hasn’t looked quite as airtight as it has in past seasons, and the unit is coming off a stretch where it gave up a massive lead to Texas in the fourth quarter. Even so, the Buckeyes are still listed at -4500 on the moneyline.
Illinois’ defense, meanwhile, has had its own issues. Bobby Hauck’s group is giving up 21.3 points per game, and that number includes games against UAB and Southern Illinois.
That makes the challenge against Ohio State easy to understand. It just doesn’t fully explain why the Illini are being priced like a team with almost no chance to stay in the game.
The rest of the early betting board reflects the same caution. Ohio State is a 27.5-point favorite, Illinois sits at +1600 on the moneyline, and the total is set at 52/5. Those numbers can still move, but for now they suggest Vegas doesn’t have much faith in Illinois making this one close.
That may be the part Bret Bielema notices most this week. Illinois isn’t favored, and nobody should expect that.
But being treated like a near four-touchdown underdog? That’s a different story.
