CHAMPAIGN - Illinois’ injury picture got a lot cloudier Friday night, and it started with the sight of David Mirkovic moving around the State Farm Center on a scooter with his left foot back in a walking boot.
That was nearly two hours before the Illini’s 95-91 exhibition loss to Baylor, and it was not what anyone expected after Mirkovic had been walking out of a boot at public events and even posted videos of himself dunking a ball. The preseason All-American is back in protective gear, even if Illinois says the latest move does not represent a fresh setback.
“Obviously without Mirk and will be without Mirk for a little while,” head coach Brad Underwood said. “They put him back in a boot.
I’ve said from Day One that we’re going to be very patient and diligent with that. We want to make sure that heals correctly and in a fashion that allows him to sustain not only for the year but for the rest of his career.
He’s one of the best rebounders in the country, and who is going to step up?”
Underwood later told Illini Inquirer that Mirkovic did not suffer a setback in his recovery from the foot injury he had at the end of summer and later needed surgery for. Still, when asked if he was bracing for Mirkovic to miss regular season games, Underwood answered, “I think so,” with No. 3 Illinois set to open the season Nov. 2 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Mirkovic arrives with huge expectations after a freshman season that put him on the national radar. He was named a Preseason All-American by CBSSports and the Associated Press after averaging 13.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season.
At 6-foot-9 and 255 pounds, the sophomore was expected to be one of the Big Ten’s top players and a centerpiece of an Illinois offense that is supposed to rank among the country’s best. Underwood called him “one of the best rebounders in the country.”
The bad news did not stop with Mirkovic.
Illinois also lost Tomislav Ivisic and Zvonimir Ivisic to injuries during the exhibition. Tomislav Ivisic exited in the second half with a left knee injury after playing 19:38 and finishing with two points and four rebounds. He went straight to the locker room, then later returned to the bench before the game ended and spoke at length with members of the coaching staff.
Zvonimir Ivisic left after a hard fall on a rebound attempt and stayed down for more than a minute before getting up and walking off. He first made it toward the team huddle before athletic trainers guided him to the locker room. He never returned to the bench.
Andrej Stojakovic also went down hard in the second half on a shot attempt and had to be helped to the locker room. He did not come back, either, after scoring 15 points with six rebounds.
“As of now, I haven’t talked to a doctor,” Underwood said. “I don’t know.
Tomi dinged his knee. I think Andrej and Z both hit their heads on the floor.
We’ll see. Nice to have Jason Jaksyts and Landon.
Those guys fought and competed and did a nice job.”

Illinois Preseason Just Got More Concerning Around David Mirkovic
Illinois preseason picture got a little murkier when sophomore forward David Mirkovic showed up in a boot and on a scooter during warmups for an exhibition game, a clear sign his recovery from a foot injury has hit another snag. He had already been held out of the exhibition matchups against Cincinnati and Baylor, leaving Illinois without one of the young pieces it hoped to evaluate before the games start counting.
Brad Underwood has stressed patience with Mirkovics recovery, saying the goal is to avoid any chance of re-injury while the staff uses these exhibitions to test lineups and get younger players more run. Even so, every missed opportunity matters in October, and Mirkovics status now adds another layer of concern to a preseason that was supposed to help clarify the rotation. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Suddenly Faces A Brutal Test To Keep Bennett Konkey
Bennett Konkeys late-season rise has turned a routine Illinois recruiting win into something a lot more fragile. The four-star commit has put together a standout senior year, and for a program trying to build momentum under Bret Bielema, keeping a player like that in the fold matters well beyond one roster spot.
Then Ohio State entered the picture with a late offer, and now Illinois has a real fight on its hands. For the Fighting Illini, the issue is bigger than one prospect staying or leaving - it is the familiar burden of trying to hold off a national power once a recruit has started drawing wider attention. Illinois Big Win Comes With One Debate Fans Wont Drop
Illinois picked up a signature 21-10 win over Oregon, and the result gave the Illini a much-needed jolt in a game that felt tense well into the fourth quarter. For long stretches, Oregon moved the ball better on paper and still could not turn it into enough points, undone by missed field goals and an offense that never found the end zone.
Collin Dixons late touchdown reception ended up becoming the moment everyone wanted to argue about, since officials reviewed the play before letting it stand. The call held because there was no indisputable evidence that Dixon lost possession, and it turned a close finish into the kind of postgame debate that tends to linger long after a big Illinois win.
