Illinois’ receiving depth took a hit this week, and Bret Bielema didn’t sugarcoat it.
With fall camp rolling on, the goal is simple for every team: get to Week 1 healthy. Illinois is now dealing with two setbacks that could thin out the pass-catching group before the season even gets going. On Thursday, Bielema gave the latest injury update, and this one came with more bad news than good.
FIU transfer wide receiver Alex Perry is dealing with a lingering injury he never fully shook, and he’s scheduled for surgery this week. Bielema said he wasn’t optimistic Perry would play this season and added that he could already be out for the year. Redshirt freshman tight end BJ Thurman is also sidelined after suffering a Jones fracture in his foot, and he could miss most of the season.
Neither injury involves a starter, but that doesn’t make the loss any less real for Illinois. Depth matters, especially at receiver, and losing bodies in camp is never ideal.
Perry’s situation, in particular, creates an opening. Bielema said Perry was likely headed for a second-string role, mainly working on the outside and rotating into Collin Dixon’s spot. Illinois’ projected starting receivers are Dixon, Hudson Clement and FAU transfer Jayshon Platt, but Perry was expected to be part of the mix because of his college experience.
Now that opportunity shifts elsewhere, and freshman Brayden Trimble looks like the biggest beneficiary. Trimble has already drawn positive buzz in camp, and Perry’s absence could push him into a bigger role faster than expected.
“Brayden Trimble has come into his own,” Bielema said. “Brayden can play a little of inside and outside, he's a little bit like Collin [Dixon], so I would say it would even put a little more emergence on Brayden.”
Trimble arrived at Illinois as a three-star recruit out of Mt. Zion, a school Bielema has recruited from often. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound receiver redshirted last season, but he may be in line for meaningful snaps early this year.
Bielema also pointed to Nate Cichy, a late addition in the Class of 2026, as another young player who has stood out in camp and could earn a spot in the rotation. Cichy, another in-state three-star prospect, committed in early June.
For Illinois, Perry’s injury is a loss. But it also accelerates the development of two younger players who now have a clearer path to the field. Trimble and Cichy may not have expected this much opportunity this soon, but both could wind up playing bigger roles than planned.
