Illinois will have to piece together its offensive line in a hurry Saturday, because two starters are out against Duke.
Starting right guard Brandon Henderson, already ruled out earlier in the week by Bret Bielema, won’t go. Starting left guard Maika Matelau also is unavailable; he wasn’t dressed during pregame warmups and had a wrap over his lower left leg.
That leaves the Illini leaning on depth against a Duke front that showed plenty of bite in last week’s 17-3 win over Tulane, when it generated 27 pressures. Illinois, meanwhile, is still sorting through an offensive line with limited game reps. Jake Renfro and Christian Martin are the only Illinois linemen with more than two FBS career starts, which makes this a serious early test for a unit facing Manny Diaz’s aggressive defense.
The most likely replacement is senior TJ McMillen, who can line up at center or guard and has become a trusted piece for Illinois. During warmups, he worked with the starters at right guard. Junior Brandon Hansen also got starter reps at left guard, and sixth-year tackle Dezmond Schuster is another option there.
Henderson has been a steady presence for Illinois, with 20 career starts over three seasons. He posted a 72.2 overall Pro Football Focus grade in last week’s 42-23 win over UAB.
Matelau arrived with plenty of buzz as the top-ranked JUCO interior offensive lineman in the Class of 2026, and he won the left guard job outright during the offseason. In the opener, he earned a 59.1 PFF grade and an 83.0 pass-blocking grade, while also helping spring Ca'Lil Valentine on a 51-yard touchdown run.
McMillen is the most familiar plug-in option. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Naperville native filled in for McMillen last week for six snaps and made a spot start at Purdue last season in relief of center Josh Kreutz.
Hansen, a 6-foot-6, 320-pound Mundelein native, started at right guard in last season’s opener against Western Illinois. He has 69 career snaps, along with an 87.2 PFF pass-blocking grade last season and a 54.0 run-blocking grade.
Schuster brings size and power, too. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Louisiana native spent his first three seasons at Illinois dealing with health issues after transferring from Hutchinson Community College, but the NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility.

Illinois Had A New WR Scare Fans Couldn't Ignore Against Duke
Brayden Trimble gave Illinois an uneasy moment in the first half against Duke when the wide receiver came up injured and limped toward the injury tent. With no official update before halftime, there was plenty of reason for concern as the Illini tried to sort out whether one of their passing-game options had been lost for the rest of the afternoon.

Wide receiver Jayshon Platt is reportedly making progress after a soft-tissue injury suffered in the preseason, and Bret Bielema said the transfer addition is improving even if the timetable for his return remains unclear.
