Illinois is entering the final week of August camp with a few roster spots still in play, and Bret Bielema is keeping the door open as he sorts through the last pieces.
“I still have a couple roster spots available to me if something would present itself,” Bielema said. “But right now it’s just kind of a wait and see.”
That uncertainty includes the possibility of two former Illini finding their way back into the mix. Bielema said he is keeping tabs on Hank Beatty and Melvin Priestly, both of whom are currently fighting for spots with NFL teams.
Beatty signed with the Tennessee Titans, while Priestly signed with the Detroit Lions. Whether either player would even want to return to Illinois if that chance came up remains unclear.
The bigger complication is the NCAA court ruling that will pause the fifth year of eligibility starting next year, which makes a return seem unlikely. Still, Bielema said he understands how unpredictable the transfer portal landscape can be and noted that active cases around the issue remain.
On the injury front, there was good news for Xavier Scott. Bielema said the defensive back is healthy and in “good form” after appearing in just three games last season because of a severe right foot injury. He’s expected to help lead a revamped defense with Matthew Bailey, who is also working back from a shoulder injury.
Illinois will be without projected starting linebacker Daniel Brown to open the season. Brown had a PRP procedure and will miss week one, which opens the door for senior Mason Muragin to start in his place. Muragin played in only two games last season, but Bielema said “he’s playing at an extremely high level” in camp.
At receiver, Hudson Clement still hasn’t been cleared for contact, though he has been taking part in scrimmage plays. The senior finished last season with 454 yards and three touchdowns, and Illinois will be counting on him as a reliable target for QB Katin Houser.
Tight end BJ Thurman is out for the year after suffering a Jones fracture in his foot, and Illinois responded by adding Payton Smith from the University of San Diego. Bielema said Smith’s experience and maturity should bring something positive to the tight end room.
With the opener set for September 3 against UAB, Illinois is down to the final stretch of camp and still shaping what the opening-day roster will look like.
