Illinois is entering the recruiting stretch with real momentum, and Brad Underwood has the visitor list to prove it.
The Illini are set to host three official visitors from the Class of 2027 in Champaign: two five-stars and one four-star. It marks the first time in the Underwood era that Illinois will bring in multiple five-star and four-star recruits for official visits, and the group could also grow to include 2028 five-star combo guard Brady Pettigrew, who could reclassify to 2027.
The names already sitting near the top of 247Sports’ latest Class of 2027 rankings tell the story. Five-star combo guard NaVarro Bowman Jr. checks in at No. 11, center Darius Wabbington is right behind him at No. 12, and four-star small forward Moussa Kamissoko lands at No. 19.
This is the kind of company Illinois wants to keep now that the program has fresh cachet after last season’s Final Four run. Underwood is trying to build Illinois into a national heavyweight, and recruiting is where that push has to show up first.
That Final Four run changed the way the Illini look on the recruiting trail. Illinois was the lowest seed in the Final Four, joined by 2-seed UConn and 1-seeds Michigan and Arizona, and the path there included wins over 11-seed VCU, 2-seed Houston, and 9-seed Iowa, which had knocked out reigning champion Florida. The run put Illinois in the spotlight, and Underwood is now working to turn that attention into long-term roster power.
The current 2027 class already has a chance to be one of the strongest in program history. Illinois sits at No. 5 nationally with commitments from four-stars Quinton Kitt and Mason Martin, and the staff still has plenty of room to keep climbing.
If Underwood lands even one of the five-star visitors, Illinois could make a serious push toward the top of the class rankings. With 26 offers already out and five-star targets at multiple positions, the Illini are in position to chase the best recruiting class the program has ever assembled.
There are still plenty of moving pieces, as there always are in recruiting. But right now, Illinois has the kind of momentum that makes big swings feel realistic.
