Illinois’ wide receiver depth took another jolt on Tuesday, and this one landed on a player who had been trending toward a major role.
Head coach Bret Bielema said FAU transfer Jayshon Platt is dealing with an injury, though he did not reveal what it is. The timeline is still unclear, and Week 1 does not sound likely at this point.
"He's a guy that we're obviously getting to know for the first time, but this injury, I think, has been one that when it first happened [we] didn't know the exact timeline on it," Bielema said."[We] have gotten good news since then. Whether he is back in Week 1 or Week 3 or Week 4, I don't really know at this point."
Platt had quickly become one of the more talked-about newcomers in camp, with only ECU quarterback transfer Katin Houser drawing more buzz among Illinois’ offseason additions. He had also pushed himself into the lead for the slot/WR3 job, a spot that had looked like a competition with veterans Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement.
Now that spot is back up for grabs, and the Illini don’t have much margin for error. Illinois has already been hit at pass catcher this fall with tight end BJ Thurman and wide receiver Alex Perry, both expected to miss the season. Platt’s injury adds another layer of uncertainty to a group that was already running thin.
That opens the door for younger players to make their case while Platt is out. The most obvious name is Brayden Trimble, who has been getting plenty of positive attention in camp and is viewed as the likeliest fill-in for the role.
Trimble has reportedly made major strides since his freshman season in 2025, and he has now gone through two fall camps after enrolling as a true freshman before the start of that 2025 season. He has also developed a strong connection with Houser.
Platt’s absence affects more than just the receiver rotation, too. He was also expected to handle return work for Illinois, mainly on punts and in the mix on kickoffs. With him sidelined for now, those duties will likely shift to Illinois State transfer Eddie Kasper.
