Illinois had a brutal weekend on the field, but the program got a much-needed lift in the form of a commitment from Harry Maileoi.
After the Illini stumbled against Purdue - a loss that stood out even in the Bret Bielema era for how rough it was - Maileoi announced on social media that he will join Illinois football in 2027.
Thank You ILLINOIS🫡

Maileoi is a 6-foot-4, 350-pound offensive lineman from Mt. San Antonio College in California. He is not rated or ranked by 247Sports, but his offer sheet includes Kansas State and California along with Illinois.
For the Illini, the appeal goes beyond the headline. Maileoi gives Illinois another massive body up front, and he fits into what should still be a veteran offensive line by the time he arrives.
Christian Martin has a fifth year next season, while Nathan Knapik is only in his third year, so both offensive tackles should be back for at least one more season. Illinois also expects Brandon Henderson back at guard; he is in his fourth year of college and still has another year of eligibility. On the other side, Maika Matelau is only in year two and has three years left in Champaign.
The line is set to lose just two pieces to eligibility. Starting center Jake Renfro is moving on after his seventh year, and depth lineman Dezmond Schuster is also gone after his sixth season.
That leaves Maileoi with a clear path to contribute quickly. He should arrive as a primary backup, and given how often Illinois’ offensive line has dealt with injuries and uneven stretches, it would not be a surprise if he pushes for starts as a freshman.
The other part that stands out is the timeline. Illinois will get three years of Maileoi, which only adds to the appeal of what could be a strong offensive line group in 2027. For a team built from the inside out, that kind of commitment matters.

Illinois Just Faced A Tough Reality In Brady Pettigrew's Visit
Brady Pettigrews official visit to Illinois gave the staff a chance to roll out the full pitch for one of the most coveted prospects in the 2028 class. The five-star from Illinois toured both the basketball and football facilities, a reminder that the Illini are trying to sell more than proximity and familiarity as they battle a national lineup of blue-blood programs for his attention.
The timing of the trip added an unavoidable dose of reality, since Pettigrew was on hand for a football game Illinois lost to Purdue. Still, the visit underscored how much the Illini want to stay in the mix for a player who is expected to be a basketball recruit and has not reclassified. With UNC, Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and Arkansas also in the chase, Illinois knows the competition will stay fierce for a long time. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Just Ran Into A Brutal Reality After Purdue Loss
Purdue left Gies Memorial Stadium with The Cannon, and Illinois was left staring at the sort of result that can reshape an early-season storyline. The Illini did not look sharp on either side of the ball in the Big Ten loss, with the defense surrendering 345 yards and the offense never finding much rhythm.
Katin Houser and the passing game never really settled in, which only added to the frustration for a team that came in trying to steady itself. After dropping three of its first five games, Illinois is now heading into a demanding stretch that includes multiple ranked opponents, leaving little margin for error if this season is going to get back on track. Illinois Loses Promising Freshman Before Her Debut Even Begins
Illinois had been looking at Lana Brenjo as a frontcourt piece who could help shape the future of the womens basketball roster, but that plan will have to wait. The freshman arrived from the professional Serbian club Mega Superbet with the kind of experience that made her an intriguing addition, especially for a team looking to add size and skill inside.
Instead, Brenjos debut will be delayed by an ACL injury that will keep her out for the entire 2026-27 season. For Illinois, it is a frustrating setback before her college career even begins, and it leaves the staff to rethink how it will cover those minutes while also waiting to see how Brenjo eventually fits once she is healthy enough to return.
