Football is finally back in Champaign, and Illinois opens the season with a UAB team that shouldn’t be treated like a throwaway opponent. The Illini are heavy favorites, but this one still carries a few early-season questions, especially with so many new pieces in place for Bret Bielema’s group.

Illinois also enters the opener dealing with some real issues in the pass-catching group. Injuries have hit late in fall camp, and the biggest setback is FAU transfer Jayshon Platt, who will miss Week 1. The receiver and tight end depth chart took more damage too, with Alex Perry and BJ Thurman both sidelined by season-ending injuries.
Platt’s return timetable remains unclear, but he’s definitely out for the opener. He had been one of the standout names in camp, bringing speed to the receiver room and offering a different look alongside veterans Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement. With Platt unavailable, freshman Brayden Trimble is expected to step into that role, and he’s drawn strong buzz from coaches and teammates.
That makes Illinois’ offense the main thing to watch early. The Blazers aren’t being asked to face an elite defense, but the Illini still need to show they can move the ball and build a comfortable cushion. There will be some natural growing pains with a new quarterback, but if Illinois is going to avoid turning this into a tense first half, the offense has to get going.
The expectation is that the game opens up later, with Illinois pulling away in the second half once the defense finds its rhythm.
