Illinois’ first exhibition already comes with a little injury drama, but there’s no real reason to sound the alarm.
The Illini will open against Cincinnati on Saturday, and while the timing lines up nicely with football’s bye week, fans hoping to see David Mirkovic make his preseason debut are going to have to wait. Head coach Brad Underwood told reporters that Mirkovic will not play, and that call fits the situation. Mirkovic is still working back from a foot injury that required surgery in late July, so Illinois has every incentive to be cautious in a game that doesn’t count.
There is also uncertainty around Jake Davis. Underwood said the senior is a game-time decision after suffering an ankle injury in practice, though he added that he “wouldn’t expect to see him” against Cincinnati. That leaves Illinois potentially short a pair of useful pieces for its first tune-up.
Davis’ situation is worth watching because he’s been a steady part of the rotation. Last season, he played nearly 20 minutes per game, averaged 5.4 points and 2.2 rebounds, and appeared in at least 30 games in each of his last two years with the Illini. He hasn’t been a headline scorer, but he’s been the kind of dependable bench option Brad Underwood can call on without blinking.
Still, the safest move may be to keep him on the sideline for this one. Illinois has two more exhibitions before the regular season begins, and this first one is more about getting loose, sorting out new pieces and knocking off the rust than pushing anyone who isn’t fully right. If that means giving younger players more chances against Cincinnati, so be it.

Illinois Just Found Out How Real Its New QB Test Is
Freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II did not ease into the job so much as get thrown into it and respond like a veteran. After Katin Houser went down against Michigan State, Clayton took over for Illinois and helped lead the team to a win, finishing 6 of 8 for 88 yards with two touchdowns. The biggest throw came in overtime, when he delivered the game-winning touchdown and gave the Illini a jolt of confidence at a position that can change everything.
Now the real test arrives, and it comes fast. Houser is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which leaves Clayton lined up to start the upcoming game against Oregon and gives Illinois a far clearer read on what it has in the freshman. One promising relief appearance can buy attention, but a start against a tougher opponent will say much more about how steady the offense can be with Clayton in control. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Is Already Tracking A Future Wing Fans Should Know
Illinois is set to host another intriguing young wing on Oct. 23, with Bronx Ganaway scheduled to make an unofficial visit to Champaign. The Columbia, Missouri, product is only in the class of 2029, but he already carries four Division I offers and has drawn attention for the kind of frame and shooting touch that make small forwards stand out early in the process.
Ganaway does not yet have an Illinois offer, but his profile is already the sort that keeps recruiting staff busy and fans curious. ESPN has him ranked No. 22 in his class, a strong early marker for a prospect whose recruitment is still in its opening chapter, and this visit gives Illinois a closer look at whether he could become a name to follow down the road. Illinois May Finally Be Getting The Receiver Boost It Needed
Jayshon Platts absence has been one of the quieter issues hanging over Illinois offense for the first half of the season. The wide receiver has missed the first six games with a soft-tissue injury, and after being listed as a game-time decision in the most recent outing, he still did not get on the field.
Bret Bielema sounded more optimistic this week, saying Platt is expected back after the bye and could be available for the Oregon game. Even then, the Illini appear ready to ease him in rather than ask for much right away, with limited snaps likely at the start as he works back into the rotation. [Read more 🡒]
