Illinois did plenty of its damage on the ground, but the game’s turning point came with a freshman quarterback making his first start and a veteran back delivering the kind of breakout run that can flip a night in an instant.
After Oregon stretched the margin to 10-0 with a 20-yard field goal, Illinois took over on its own 20-yard line for the sixth offensive drive of the game. Most people watching expected a long, measured march. Aidan Laughery had other ideas.
The team captain, in his fifth and final year at Illinois, took a pitch from Michael Clayton II and burst 75 yards to the end zone for the Fighting Illini’s first score. It was just two yards short of his career high of 77, and it kick-started Illinois’ 21-10 win over the Ducks.
Laughery’s night was part of a broader running effort that kept the pressure on Oregon all game. With starting running back Ca’lil Valentine lost for the season against Purdue, Bret Bielema has leaned harder on Laughery, but the support behind him showed up too.
True freshman Javari Barnett handled six carries for 27 yards, while backup quarterback Carson Boyd also gave the offense a jolt on the ground. Boyd’s 20-yard run pushed the ball all the way to Oregon’s 13-yard line, one of the more notable plays of the night both on the stat sheet and in real time.
By the end of the game, Illinois had piled up 225 rushing yards against an Oregon defense that had been allowing just 133.6 per game.
The matchup also became a backup-quarterback showdown after injuries knocked out the expected starters. Oregon’s Dante Moore and Illinois transfer Katin Houser were both unavailable, leaving Dylan Raiola and Clayton II to carry the load.
Raiola, a third-year quarterback and former Nebraska starter, opened well, going 3-for-5 for 45 yards on Oregon’s first drive, which helped the Ducks strike first. Clayton II, a true freshman whose first exposure to B1G football came in the latter half of Illinois’ road win against MSU, started slowly.
On his first drive, the Orlando, Florida native completed 2 of 3 passes for five yards. But the finish told the story.
Raiola ended up 27-of-41 for 246 yards, but he did not throw a touchdown pass. Clayton II finished 11-of-18 for 84 yards and two touchdowns, and his first start offered Illinois a glimpse of what could come next.
Meanwhile, Oregon’s kicking game turned into its own mess. Gage Hurych went 1-for-4 on field goal attempts, and that miss-heavy day also meant fans in attendance could redeem a code for a free six-piece chicken nugget at any local or participating McDonald’s restaurants.
Laughrey finished with 13 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. Dixon added six receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Michael Clayton II Showed Why Illinois Trusted Him Against Oregon
When Katin Houser went down, Illinois had to pivot in a hurry, and Michael Clayton II gave the Illini exactly the kind of answer coaches hope to see in that spot. He stepped into the lineup against Oregon and kept the offense on schedule, pairing steady passing with the kind of ball security that can settle an entire sideline. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. also mixed in Carson Boyd as part of the plan, but Clayton was the one who helped Illinois navigate the change at quarterback and come away with the win.
What stood out most was how little Clayton gave Oregon to work with. In a game where a backup can easily become a source of mistakes, he played cleanly and gave Illinois a chance to stay balanced offensively. With Houser out, Clayton is expected to hold the starting job for the foreseeable future, and after the way he handled that stage, it is easy to see why the staff trusted him in the first place. Illinois Just Sent A Big Ten Message With This Win
A second-half surge and a lot of patience with the ground game carried Illinois to a 21-10 win over Oregon, a result that felt bigger than a single conference victory. The Illini flipped the game with 21 unanswered points after halftime, leaning into a run-heavy approach that featured Aidan Laughery and a quarterback rotation between Michael Clayton II and Carson Boyd.
Oregon had chances to keep the pressure on, but three missed field goals and a series of stalled trips in Illinois territory left the Ducks empty-handed when the game started to tilt. Illinois now turns to Maryland, a team in transition after recently parting ways with its head coach, with momentum and a clearer sense of how this roster wants to win in Big Ten play. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Just Delivered The Win Bret Bielema Desperately Needed
Down 10-0 in the first half, Illinois found the kind of response Bret Bielema has been chasing. Aidan Laughery flipped the mood with a 75-yard touchdown run, and Michael Clayton II added two touchdown passes as the Illini settled in and turned a slow start into a 21-10 win over Oregon.
Illinois did the rest with its defense, which kept Oregon off the board in the second half and closed the door on the comeback. For a program looking for a needed jolt, it was the kind of win that can change the tone around a season, even if plenty of work still remains. [Read more 🡒]
