After the mess of last week’s loss to Duke, Illinois needed a clean response. It got one, and then some.
The Fighting Illini rolled past SIU 48-10 at Gies Memorial Stadium on Saturday, pairing a sharp defensive rebound with an offense that kept landing punches. Illinois finished with 57 tackles, six tackles for loss and minus-26 yards for SIU, a total that reflected just how much the Salukis were bottled up.
SIU entered the game averaging nearly 400 yards of offense over its last three outings, but the Illini held it to 257. The Salukis, who had been averaging 198 rushing yards per game, were limited to 29 on the ground.
That kind of turnaround mattered after the tackling issues that showed up against Duke. Head coach Bret Bielema addressed that after the loss, and Illinois responded with a much cleaner day on that side of the ball. Bobby Hauck and the 335 defense made their point quickly.
The offense picked up the tone from there.
Illinois opened with a one-yard rushing touchdown from fifth-year back Jordan Anderson, then kept the pressure on after SIU answered with a score of its own. Barry Lunney Jr.’s group strung together three touchdown drives, including a 45-yard strike from Katin Houser to Colin Dixon. That connection has been one of the storylines of the season, and Dixon made his own bit of history in the process, tying and then breaking the single-season record for most touchdowns scored in Gies Memorial Stadium with seven.
It happened in front of the 83rd sellout crowd, adding another layer to a day that never really gave SIU a foothold.
Houser spread the ball around, too. Hudson Clement caught five passes for 69 yards, while Brayden Trimble added five receptions for 57 yards. Dixon may have been the headline name in the end zone, but Houser kept the passing game humming with plenty of balance.
The final margin made this more than just a bounce-back win. Illinois looked sharper, faster and more connected on both sides of the ball, and the result left plenty of highlights to revisit later.
One of them came on the longest Illinois run since 2021, a play described as “As slippery as butter on a piping hot skillet. Folks, take a good look at the longest run from an Illini since 2021!”
Another came with a familiar warning about Bailey: “Having Bailey on the field is like playing against 13 players instead of 11”
Clark also filled up the stat sheet with seven total tackles, five solo tackles and two pass breakups.
Now the non-conference slate is over, and Illinois turns to a much bigger stage next Saturday. The Illini head to Athens to face No. 6 Ohio State at Ohio Stadium, with FOX carrying the Big Noon Kickoff game.
