Bret Bielema has put together a strong 2026 class for Illinois football, and the transfer portal has already started to show why it mattered.
The Illini landed a freshman group ranked inside the top 25, and their transfer portal haul checked in inside the top 45. Among the newcomers, one addition stands out because of both his position and his resume: seventh-year senior Jake Renfro.
Illinois clearly targeted a spot that can make everything else work. Center is one of those jobs, and Renfro gives the Illini a proven piece right in the middle of the line.
That move got a national boost on Thursday when Illinois football announced that Renfro had been named to the Rimington Trophy watch list.

The Rimington Trophy goes to the best center in college football, and it has been around since 2000. Illinois has never won it.
Renfro gives the program a real shot at changing that. The biggest question, though, is the same one that has followed him before: health. Can he stay on the field?
When he has been available, Renfro has produced everywhere heโs gone. At Cincinnati, he played three seasons, logging 19 starts and 21 appearances over his first two years.
He earned first-team All-AAC honors in his second season. In year three, an injury wiped out his season.
He then moved on to Wisconsin for three seasons. The first year was still part of his recovery, though he did start the bowl game.
In his second season with the Badgers, he started 12 games and established himself as one of the Big Tenโs best centers. Last season, he started four games before another injury ended his year.
Now Illinois has the upside and the risk in the same package. Renfro is healthy right now, and if that holds, the expectation is clear: he should be an All-Big Ten first-team type of player.
Thatโs the kind of center Illinois needed. And if he starts all 13 games for the Orange and Blue, it would be no surprise to see his name keep showing up in award conversations.
