Illinois has spent much of the 2026 season leaning on a familiar face in the middle of its defense, and fifth-year linebacker James Kreutz is starting to look like a bigger piece of the puzzle.
The Bannockburn, Illinois, native has opened the year with eight tackles through two games, including five against Duke, and that early production lines up with the role Bret Bielema described before the season. Bielema said, “You know, James really hasn't played a lot at linebacker. He's played a lot of football for us in roles, but he's going to play some early-down defense, and [we're] super-excited for him."
Kreutz’s game has always been built on physicality. At 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, he brings a downhill style that fits cleanly in the middle of the defense.
He diagnoses the backfield quickly, attacks running lanes without hesitation and is willing to take on blockers head-on. That combination makes him tough to move and gives Illinois a linebacker who can meet ball carriers close to the line of scrimmage.
The instincts are a big part of the package too. Kreutz generally finds solid angles in pursuit and has enough awareness to fight through traffic instead of disappearing in the wash. He also gives the defense another option as a blitzer, where his willingness to shoot gaps can create pressure.
His path to this point started at Loyola Academy, where he played both linebacker and running back and finished his high school career as a first-team Class 8A All-State selection as a senior. He joined Illinois in 2022 and spent much of that first season developing behind an experienced defense, a year that ended with him being named the program’s Defensive Look Team Player of the Year.
Since then, his role has grown step by step. Kreutz got his first career start in 2023, then became a more regular part of the linebacker rotation in 2024 with four starts. In 2025, he appeared in every game and added another start, further cementing himself as one of the most seasoned players in Illinois’ linebacker room.
Now in his fifth year with the program, Kreutz has been around Illinois through much of Bret Bielema’s tenure, and that experience matters as Bobby Hauck’s new system takes shape. His run support and downhill temperament make him a natural fit against the run, and if he can hold up in pass defense - even if that comes more through pass-rush usage than pure coverage snaps - he could be headed for the biggest defensive role of his Illinois career.

Bret Bielemas latest injury update offered Illinois a little clarity at a time when the schedule is about to tighten up. Transfer receiver Jayshon Platt is expected to sit out the next two games, including the Big Ten opener against Ohio State, while linebacker Daniel Brown appears to be trending in the right direction as the Illini work through the early part of conference play.
Brown may be able to contribute in a limited role this week, and the bigger payoff could come when Illinois lines up against Ohio State with more of its defense available. Platts possible return in Week 5 against Purdue would also give the offense another piece back, but for now the Illini are left managing the next stretch without one newcomer and hoping another can ramp up just in time. Ismael Kantes path to Illinois has been a winding one, and it has now put him in position to matter in a much bigger way. The fifth-year linebacker arrived after stops at Northern State and Iowa Central Community College, then spent his first season in Champaign mostly on special teams and in a reserve role before breaking through into a starting job in 2026. For a defense looking for steady playmakers, Kantes rise has been one of the more interesting developments around the program.
His appeal is easy to see. Kante brings athleticism, versatility and an aggressive edge that can change how a defense plays, and he already has a notable interception return for a touchdown to his name. Under coach Bobby Hauck, Illinois appears to have found a linebacker who can do more than fill snaps, and the next step is finding out just how central he can become to the unit as the season unfolds.
