Illinois is adding another familiar name to its non-conference calendar, and this one comes with recent history attached. The Illini will face Penn on Nov. 5, giving Brad Underwood’s team an early-season matchup against a program it already handled in the NCAA Tournament last season.
That March meeting was lopsided in Illinois’ favor. The Illini rolled past Penn 105-70 in the first round, their biggest win in the tournament by margin.
It also extended a trend that has followed Penn head coach Fran McCaffery for years. McCaffery, who spent 15 seasons at Iowa before being fired after the 2024-2025 season, has been a frequent problem for Illinois opponents - and Illinois itself has been especially tough on him.
In the last 11 meetings against McCaffery, Illinois is 10-1.
The matchup won’t be an exact replay of that NCAA Tournament game. Illinois won’t be bringing back the same roster from last season, and Penn will look different too, though most of the starting five will still be familiar for the Illini. Even so, it gives Illinois another early test in a season that begins with serious expectations.
Underwood has made no secret of the standard he wants his team to chase next year: a National Championship. Illinois has the look of a contender on paper, with key returnees, transfer additions, and pieces from the 2026 recruiting class all helping shape the roster.
The Penn game is now the sixth confirmed non-conference opponent on Illinois’ schedule, and the rest of the list is loaded. Texas Tech, Duke, UConn, Missouri, and UNC are already on board. Every one of those teams reached the NCAA Tournament last season, with Duke getting to the Elite Eight and UConn finishing as the national runner-up.
There are still six more non-conference games to be added, but even at this stage, Illinois’ schedule is already looking brutal. Underwood clearly isn’t backing away from the challenge.
