Illinois Just Sent A CFP Contender Home With A Frustrating Loss

Despite the Ducks' setback against Illinois, Teitum Tuioti's performance shines as he clinches MVP honors, showcasing his defensive prowess.

Teitum Tuioti gave Oregon everything he had Saturday in Champaign, and still it wasn’t enough to keep the Ducks’ playoff picture from taking a hit.

The senior outside linebacker was the best player on the field for Oregon in a 21-10 loss to Illinois at Gies Memorial Stadium, piling up a career-high 2.5 sacks and finishing with eight tackles, four of them solo. He also forced a fumble late in the first quarter, the fourth forced fumble of his career, stepping in after Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola had coughed it up on the previous play.

Even with Tuioti wrecking the Illinois backfield, the Ducks couldn’t turn enough of the game in their favor. Oregon outgained the Fighting Illini 426-314 and forced eight punts, but the offense never made the key plays when it needed them most. The Ducks managed 21 first downs on 73 snaps, yet a 4-for-15 showing on third down and three missed field goals from Gage Hurych - from 52, 53 and 47 yards - left too much damage to overcome.

Illinois answered Oregon’s early momentum with 21 straight points and handed the Ducks their first conference road loss since joining the Big Ten in 2024.

Tuioti’s numbers keep adding up, and so does his national profile. The 6-foot-3, 263-pound senior entered the 2026 season as a Walter Camp first-team preseason All-American and landed on the Lombardi Award and Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch lists. After earning third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2025 with 9.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss, he’s kept rolling through seven games this year with 5.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss.

His latest outburst moved his career sack total to 22.5, leaving him one behind Matt LaBounty and Kenny Rowe for seventh place on Oregon’s all-time list. He also now has 35.5 career tackles for loss, putting him just half a tackle for loss shy of DeForest Buckner.

While the Ducks couldn’t finish drives, they did lean on their backs. Jordon Davison rushed for 92 yards, his best total since he ran for 102 against Wisconsin on Oct. 25, 2025, and scored Oregon’s only touchdown with a two-yard run on the opening drive.

Dierre Hill Jr. added 94 total yards, including 83 on the ground and 11 through the air. Oregon still hasn’t produced a 100-yard rusher this season.

The loss leaves Oregon at 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. The Ducks head back to Eugene next week for a matchup with No. 24 Northwestern, which is 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the league after beating Rutgers 42-14.

Michael Clayton II Showed Why Illinois Trusted Him Against Oregon

When Katin Houser went down, Illinois had to pivot in a hurry, and Michael Clayton II gave the Illini exactly the kind of answer coaches hope to see in that spot. He stepped into the lineup against Oregon and kept the offense on schedule, pairing steady passing with the kind of ball security that can settle an entire sideline. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. also mixed in Carson Boyd as part of the plan, but Clayton was the one who helped Illinois navigate the change at quarterback and come away with the win.

What stood out most was how little Clayton gave Oregon to work with. In a game where a backup can easily become a source of mistakes, he played cleanly and gave Illinois a chance to stay balanced offensively. With Houser out, Clayton is expected to hold the starting job for the foreseeable future, and after the way he handled that stage, it is easy to see why the staff trusted him in the first place. Illinois Offense Just Found A New Reason For Fans To Believe

Illinois offense got a much-needed boost in the win over Oregon, and it came with a little bit of everything. The ground game set the tone, Aidan Laughrey broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run, and freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II settled into his first start by completing 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two scores.

For a team that has spent plenty of time searching for a steadier offensive identity, the combination was encouraging in more ways than one. Illinois still had help from Oregons side of the scoreboard, with Gage Hurych missing three field goals, but the Illini walked away looking like a team with at least a few more answers than questions on offense. Illinois Just Sent A Big Ten Message With This Win

A second-half surge and a lot of patience with the ground game carried Illinois to a 21-10 win over Oregon, a result that felt bigger than a single conference victory. The Illini flipped the game with 21 unanswered points after halftime, leaning into a run-heavy approach that featured Aidan Laughery and a quarterback rotation between Michael Clayton II and Carson Boyd.

Oregon had chances to keep the pressure on, but three missed field goals and a series of stalled trips in Illinois territory left the Ducks empty-handed when the game started to tilt. Illinois now turns to Maryland, a team in transition after recently parting ways with its head coach, with momentum and a clearer sense of how this roster wants to win in Big Ten play. [Read more 🡒]
