Illinois didn’t win this one with flash. It won it with its legs, a steadier defense, and a game plan that grew sharper as the afternoon wore on.
The Illini beat Oregon 21-10 at home, improving to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play while putting together their best result of the season so far. Illinois scored 21 straight points after spotting the Ducks an early lead, and the response was built around a run game that eventually took over.
The tone of the day shifted after Illinois chose to defer following the coin toss, passing on the chance to start with the ball in freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II’s hands. That decision set up what became the key stretch of the game, the middle eight, where Bret Bielema’s team grabbed control. Aidan Laughery’s 75-yard touchdown run late in the first half and a nine-play, 70-yard opening drive of the second half gave Illinois 14 unanswered points and flipped the pressure back onto Oregon, which had opened with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown march of its own.
Laughery’s burst was the Gibson City native’s second-longest run of the season, trailing only the 77-yarder he broke against Southern Illinois earlier this year. After that, Illinois leaned harder into the ground game and kept feeding it.
By the end of the afternoon, the Illini had piled up 225 rushing yards. Laughery led the way with 123, while Jordan Anderson and Javari Barnett combined for 94 more.
Illinois also mixed in sophomore quarterback Carson Boyd, who worked mostly as a run-first threat. Boyd completed one pass for five yards and added 21 rushing yards on four carries.
Clayton handled the passing load and made it count. In his first start since replacing Katin Houser in East Lansing two weeks ago, he finished 11 of 18 for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense did its part, too, with key stops that kept Oregon from cashing in. One of the biggest came on the Ducks’ second missed field goal from beyond 50 yards, which helped give Illinois a chance to stretch the lead on just its fourth drive of the second half. The result was a drive built on the run before Clayton finished it with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Collin Dixon, who made a strong catch to secure his program record-tying 10th touchdown of the season.
Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola, facing Illinois for the second time in his career, still put up numbers in defeat. He went 27 of 41 for 246 yards, and the Ducks also got a productive day on the ground from three runners who combined for 180 yards.
But execution in Illinois territory, especially after halftime, hurt Oregon badly. The Ducks missed three field goals and left nine points on the board, while also surrendering good field position three times.
Illinois now heads to Maryland next week to face a Terrapins team without a head coach. Maryland is 2-5 and 0-4 in the Big Ten after parting with Mike Locksley three days ago.
The Halloween matchup is set for 11 a.m. CT on FS1.

Michael Clayton II Showed Why Illinois Trusted Him Against Oregon
When Katin Houser went down, Illinois had to pivot in a hurry, and Michael Clayton II gave the Illini exactly the kind of answer coaches hope to see in that spot. He stepped into the lineup against Oregon and kept the offense on schedule, pairing steady passing with the kind of ball security that can settle an entire sideline. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. also mixed in Carson Boyd as part of the plan, but Clayton was the one who helped Illinois navigate the change at quarterback and come away with the win.
What stood out most was how little Clayton gave Oregon to work with. In a game where a backup can easily become a source of mistakes, he played cleanly and gave Illinois a chance to stay balanced offensively. With Houser out, Clayton is expected to hold the starting job for the foreseeable future, and after the way he handled that stage, it is easy to see why the staff trusted him in the first place. Illinois Offense Just Found A New Reason For Fans To Believe
Illinois offense got a much-needed boost in the win over Oregon, and it came with a little bit of everything. The ground game set the tone, Aidan Laughrey broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run, and freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II settled into his first start by completing 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two scores.
For a team that has spent plenty of time searching for a steadier offensive identity, the combination was encouraging in more ways than one. Illinois still had help from Oregons side of the scoreboard, with Gage Hurych missing three field goals, but the Illini walked away looking like a team with at least a few more answers than questions on offense. Illinois Just Delivered The Win Bret Bielema Desperately Needed
Down 10-0 in the first half, Illinois found the kind of response Bret Bielema has been chasing. Aidan Laughery flipped the mood with a 75-yard touchdown run, and Michael Clayton II added two touchdown passes as the Illini settled in and turned a slow start into a 21-10 win over Oregon.
Illinois did the rest with its defense, which kept Oregon off the board in the second half and closed the door on the comeback. For a program looking for a needed jolt, it was the kind of win that can change the tone around a season, even if plenty of work still remains. [Read more 🡒]
