Illinois walked into Saturday’s homecoming game as a 10-point favorite and walked out with a mess on its hands.
Purdue left Gies Memorial Stadium with The Cannon, and the Illini were left sorting through a loss that exposed problems in all three phases. It was a flat showing from Bret Bielema’s team, and it gave the Boilermakers their first Big Ten win since beating Indiana on November 25, 2023.
The defense was one of the biggest questions entering the day, especially with inside linebackers coach Roger Cooper taking over as defensive playcaller after Bobby Hauck’s resignation. That change did not bring an immediate fix. Illinois had trouble tackling and gave up 345 yards to the No. 59 offense in the country.
The offense wasn’t much better. Katin Houser couldn’t get Illinois rolling in the first half, finishing that stretch with just 45 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t really settle in until the final two minutes, when the Illini scored 10 of their 17 points.
The loss hits hard because Illinois needed this one. Instead, the team dropped to three losses in its first five games, and the road ahead looks brutal.
Three ranked teams still wait on the schedule: No. 13 Oregon, No.
21 UCLA and No. 20 Iowa.
Illinois also has Nebraska, which is 5-0, coming up on November 6, along with a Northwestern team that just beat Penn State 34-13 on Friday.
For a team whose biggest win so far is against UAB in Week 1, the margin for error is shrinking fast. The defense still hasn’t settled into an identity, and the offense took a step backward from Week 4 to Week 5.
Bielema has work to do, and there’s still time to adjust. But after what happened against Purdue, it’s no surprise Illinois fans are staring at October with a sinking feeling.

Illinois Just Faced A Tough Reality In Brady Pettigrew's Visit
Brady Pettigrews official visit to Illinois gave the staff a chance to roll out the full pitch for one of the most coveted prospects in the 2028 class. The five-star from Illinois toured both the basketball and football facilities, a reminder that the Illini are trying to sell more than proximity and familiarity as they battle a national lineup of blue-blood programs for his attention.
The timing of the trip added an unavoidable dose of reality, since Pettigrew was on hand for a football game Illinois lost to Purdue. Still, the visit underscored how much the Illini want to stay in the mix for a player who is expected to be a basketball recruit and has not reclassified. With UNC, Kentucky, Duke, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and Arkansas also in the chase, Illinois knows the competition will stay fierce for a long time. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Quietly Addressed A Big Offensive Line Need After Rough Weekend
After a rough weekend, Illinois found a little roster relief on the line with a commitment from Mt. San Antonio College offensive lineman Harry Maileoi for the 2027 season. Bret Bielema and his staff have been working to keep the offensive front stocked for both the present and the future, and Maileoi gives the Illini another big body to develop in a room that will need it.
At 6-foot-4 and 350 pounds, Maileoi arrives with the kind of size Illinois can build around, and he had drawn interest from programs such as Kansas State and California before settling on the Illini. For a team trying to stabilize its offensive line pipeline, his pledge matters as much for what it says about the programs recruiting pitch as it does for the depth chart, because Illinois clearly sees him as part of the next wave up front. Illinois Loses Promising Freshman Before Her Debut Even Begins
Illinois had been looking at Lana Brenjo as a frontcourt piece who could help shape the future of the womens basketball roster, but that plan will have to wait. The freshman arrived from the professional Serbian club Mega Superbet with the kind of experience that made her an intriguing addition, especially for a team looking to add size and skill inside.
Instead, Brenjos debut will be delayed by an ACL injury that will keep her out for the entire 2026-27 season. For Illinois, it is a frustrating setback before her college career even begins, and it leaves the staff to rethink how it will cover those minutes while also waiting to see how Brenjo eventually fits once she is healthy enough to return.
