Illinois Just Entered The Race For Another Elite Five-Star Big

Illinois intensifies its recruiting efforts by targeting highly sought-after 2028 prospect Bentley Lusakueno, signaling a strategic push to bolster its future roster under coach Brad Underwood.

Illinois is back in the mix for another elite 2028 prospect, and this time the target is Bentley Lusakueno.

The 6-foot-10, 205-pound power forward from Woodward Academy in Georgia announced Wednesday night that Illinois had offered him a scholarship. Lusakueno shared the news on social media and thanked the program directly: "Thank you to the University of Illinois, Coach Underwood, Coach Crocker and the entire coaching staff for the scholarship offer! All glory to God. pic.twitter.com/cfXWxxdeeC"

Lusakueno arrives on the board as a five-star recruit, ranked No. 6 overall in the class of 2028. He is also rated the No. 3 power forward in the country and the top player in Georgia.

Illinois is not alone in the chase. Tennessee, Oregon and Miami are among the other programs already involved, and Auburn is in the mix as well. Still, the source of the offer matters here: Illinois is one of the first major programs to jump in, while several of the biggest names have yet to make their move.

That list figures to grow fast. Kansas, Duke, North Carolina and Indiana are all mentioned as schools that are not yet on the offer sheet but are expected to join soon.

What makes Lusakueno so appealing is the modern profile he brings. He has the size of a true frontcourt piece, but he can stretch the floor, pick-and-pop and even step beyond the arc to hit shots.

His length also stands out on the defensive end, where he can cause real problems. He looks, at least from the description, like the kind of player who kept growing after starting out more like a guard.

For Illinois, the offer adds another major name to its 2028 board. The Illini are already in on Dylan Betts, a 7-foot-3 big man in the same class. Betts projects more as a No. 5, while Lusakueno fits more naturally as a No. 4, giving Illinois a chance to chase a pair of towering frontcourt pieces.

Brad Underwood has already helped make Illinois a real player with five-star talent, and the program’s recent recruiting track record has put it in position to stay in that lane. If the Illini keep stacking elite commitments in the classes ahead, they’ll only strengthen that standing.

Illinois Camp Is Revealing A New Leadership Core And Key Starter

Illinois footballs training camp stayed behind closed doors for a second straight day, with a scrimmage set for Wednesday night and a media session coming Thursday featuring Bret Bielema and a few players. Even without the public view, the camp has already started to clarify where the program is heading, and the most immediate sign is a new leadership group built from six first-time captains: Aidan Laughery, Collin Dixon, Katin Houser, Jake Renfro, Matthew Bailey and Xavier Scott.

Another notable development is along the defensive front, where Darrell Prater has settled in quickly after transferring from Jacksonville State. Praters fit has been strong enough that he is now positioned to start at nose tackle in Illinois new defensive scheme, a meaningful early indicator for a unit still sorting out roles and responsibilities as camp pushes into its more revealing stages. Illinois Just Addressed A Tight End Problem Fans Were Watching

Illinois got some needed help at tight end this week, with Bret Bielema announcing that fifth-year transfer Peyton Smith from the University of San Diego has joined the program and will wear No. 40. Smith arrives as a veteran option at a spot that had been thinned by offseason injuries, giving the Illini a little more experience and flexibility as they work through the early part of camp.

Bielema also left open the door for additional roster movement, noting the possibility of more additions depending on eligibility decisions tied to ongoing litigation. For Illinois, that means the tight end room may not be done changing yet, but Smiths arrival at least gives the staff another body and a proven college player while the bigger roster picture sorts itself out. Illinois Fans Just Got A Tough Jer'zhan Newton NFL Update

Jer'Zhan Newtons first season in the NFL has hit an early snag, and it is one Illinois fans will be keeping an eye on. The former Fighting Illini standout, drafted by Washington in 2024, has had surgery for a torn pectoral muscle, a setback that comes with plenty of uncertainty as the Commanders try to sort out their defensive line plans.

For Washington, the immediate issue is replacing a young interior presence while Newton works through rehab and the medical staff watches how he responds over time. For Illinois supporters, it is a reminder of how quickly a promising pro career can be tested, even before it has a chance to settle in. [Read more 🡒]
