After last week’s mess against Duke, Illinois needed a clean answer. It got one Saturday, and then some.
The Illini backed up the talk about fixing their tackling with a sharp defensive performance in a 48-10 win over Southern Illinois at Gies Memorial Stadium. Illinois finished with 57 tackles, six tackles for loss and minus-26 yards on those stops, and the Salukis were held to 257 total yards after piling up 1,196 in their previous three games. SIU, a team averaging 198 rushing yards per game, managed only 29 on the ground.
“Especially when it came to tackling, I feel like everybody took it personal at practice to just want to be better,” cornerback Juice Clarke said after the win.
That improvement showed up early and often. Illinois came out with force on both sides, and the offense quickly matched the defense’s energy. Barry Lunney Jr.’s group opened with a one-yard rushing touchdown from fifth-year back Jordan Anderson, then kept building after SIU (2-2) answered with a score of its own.
The biggest strike came on a 45-yard connection from Katin Houser to Collin Dixon, a throw that fit right into the rhythm the two have been building all season.
“It’s been very special,” Houser said of Dixon. “He’s a really good player, and I trust him 100%.”
For Dixon, the afternoon turned into a history-making one. He tied and then broke the single-season record for most touchdowns scored in Gies Memorial Stadium with seven, then kept going. He was presented the game ball in the locker room afterward, though he said he had no idea the record was even in reach.
”I was not aware,” Dixon said. “Coach Harper Cole told me on the sideline that I just broke it and that they were saving the ball.”
Dixon finished with eight catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and his record-setting 27-yard score pushed him to eight touchdowns on the season.
Houser spread the ball around, too. Hudson Clement caught five passes for 69 yards, and Brayden Trimble added five grabs for 57 yards. The passing game had plenty of room to breathe once Illinois’ defense started forcing SIU into long stretches without much room to operate.
The ground game had its own highlight moment as well. Laughery went for 93 yards on four carries and scored a rushing touchdown, giving Illinois another explosive piece in a game that turned into a showcase by the second half.
For Illinois, the 48-10 finish offered more than just a bounce-back result. It gave the Illini a chance to show that one rough night doesn’t define them, especially with both units clicking in the same game.
Non-conference play is now over, and the next challenge is a big one. Illinois heads to Columbus to face No. 6 Ohio State at Ohio Stadium next Saturday in a game that will air on FOX as part of Big Noon Kickoff.
