Illinois is widening its recruiting lens, and the next name on the board is a very young one. The Illini will host class of 2029 forward Bronx Ganaway for an unofficial visit in Champaign on Oct. 23, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports.
Ganaway, a native of Columbia, Missouri, already has four Division I offers. Missouri is one of them, along with Iowa, Creighton and St.
Louis. Illinois has not been reported as an offer holder yet.
The 6-foot-8 wing attends Father Tolton High School in Missouri and plays AAU basketball for KC Run GMC on the UAA Circuit. 247Sports has not released class of 2029 rankings, but ESPN’s early top 25 places him at No. 22 in the class.
What stands out immediately is the shot. Ganaway is a deadeye from deep, and he brings the kind of size Brad Underwood tends to value on the wing. His jumper features a fluid energy transfer, a strong base and a crisp motion, and he can knock down shots both off the catch and off the dribble.
He is not much of a movement shooter right now, but in spot-up situations he is excellent. Ganaway can also create for himself from deep with hang-pulls, one-dribble pull-ups and shot-fake sidestep jumpers already in his toolkit. That bag figures to keep growing.
In the midrange, he has that same one-dribble pull-up, plus a fadeaway and a simple face-up jumper, often after a jab step. Around the basket, he is willing to play through contact, though the jumper is clearly his preferred answer when it is available.
Ganaway is also a solid athlete who should keep improving in that area as he moves through high school. He handles the ball comfortably enough to push in transition, work in the halfcourt and manage the in-between moments.
Defensively, his size, length and fluidity give him real upside, though at this stage that part of his game is still a projection. As he gets stronger and more athletic, his ceiling on that end should keep rising.

Illinois Just Found Out How Real Its New QB Test Is
Freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II did not ease into the job so much as get thrown into it and respond like a veteran. After Katin Houser went down against Michigan State, Clayton took over for Illinois and helped lead the team to a win, finishing 6 of 8 for 88 yards with two touchdowns. The biggest throw came in overtime, when he delivered the game-winning touchdown and gave the Illini a jolt of confidence at a position that can change everything.
Now the real test arrives, and it comes fast. Houser is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which leaves Clayton lined up to start the upcoming game against Oregon and gives Illinois a far clearer read on what it has in the freshman. One promising relief appearance can buy attention, but a start against a tougher opponent will say much more about how steady the offense can be with Clayton in control. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Opens Exhibition With Two Injury Situations Fans Will Track
Illinois will head into its exhibition game against Cincinnati without one of its biggest frontcourt pieces, as Brad Underwood said David Mirkovic will sit out while continuing to recover from foot surgery. The matchup is still a useful tune-up before the regular season begins, but it will have a different feel with one of the teams star forwards unavailable.
Jake Davis adds another layer of uncertainty after injuring his ankle in practice and landing as a game-time decision. For a team trying to use the exhibition as a clean early checkpoint, both situations are worth watching closely, since this is the first real chance to see how the roster looks once the games start counting. Illinois May Finally Be Getting The Receiver Boost It Needed
Jayshon Platts absence has been one of the quieter issues hanging over Illinois offense for the first half of the season. The wide receiver has missed the first six games with a soft-tissue injury, and after being listed as a game-time decision in the most recent outing, he still did not get on the field.
Bret Bielema sounded more optimistic this week, saying Platt is expected back after the bye and could be available for the Oregon game. Even then, the Illini appear ready to ease him in rather than ask for much right away, with limited snaps likely at the start as he works back into the rotation. [Read more 🡒]
