Illinois football’s defense has spent the first two games of the season making life difficult on everyone except the Illini. After allowing 54 total points and 376 yards in Saturday’s 31-27 loss to Duke, Bret Bielema’s staff is already working ahead, and one of the names now on the board is Tennessee EDGE Fred Ntumba from the class of 2028.

A product of Antioch, Tennessee, Ntumba has started the 2026 season in a big way. Through four games, MaxPreps lists him with 32 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, eight sacks and seven hurries. The 6-foot-3 junior has also climbed into the upper tier of pass rushers in Tennessee, sitting No. 2 in the state in sacks behind Powell’s Joshua Kay.
The recruiting profile is already growing. Ntumba has picked up offers from several FBS programs, including Mississippi State, Arkansas and Wake Forrest.
For Illinois, the interest makes sense. The Illini have only two sacks this season, which puts them at No. 106 nationally, and they’re also at the bottom of the country in tackling. Pressure on opposing quarterbacks has been hard to come by, and the missed tackles have been just as damaging.
That’s why adding edge talent remains a priority, and Ntumba fits the mold of what Illinois is chasing. His career numbers back that up: 150 tackles and 17 sacks.
Illinois has already landed commitments from six pass rushers from across the country from 2026-2028, but Ntumba’s combination of frame, instincts and production makes him a name to watch. As his recruitment keeps moving, his stock is only expected to rise before graduation.

His increased athleticism and agility could help him close that gap, but a foot injury could also limit what he can do early on, and Illinois needs the whole frontcourt intact for the upside to really show.
