Illinois’ 48-10 win over Southern Illinois gave the home crowd plenty to enjoy, but it also gave the staff another chance to work on a long game they’ve been playing for years: keeping Illinois on the radar with in-state prospects who may not be household names yet.
That’s where Zen Cambric comes in.
The Homewood-Flossmoor junior is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety in the Class of 2028, still unrated and still early in the process, but clearly paying attention to what Illinois is building. He made the trip to Champaign for Saturday’s game, and the visit left an impression.
“It’s amazing, it’s way bigger than anything I imagined,” he said while standing inside the Fighting Illini Center for Excellence to avoid heavy rainfall pregame. “The stadium is amazing, the facility is amazing.”
For Cambric, the trip wasn’t just about seeing a football game. It was also a look at how far the program has come. He said the Illinois team he watched on Saturday looks nothing like the one he grew up with, describing the program’s rise as “going
from the middle of the Big Ten to now one of the top schools in the Big Ten and the country.”
That message wasn’t lost on him during his conversations with the staff, either. Cambric said secondary coach Ronnie Bradford made a point to talk with him and gave him feedback on the way he plays and the way he’s built.
“They told me they like the size, like how I play coming downhill,” he said, while also keeping his focus on his high school team. “[He told me] just to work. We lost our last game, so just like them, we’ve gotta bounce back.”
Cambric’s style lines up with the kind of physical defensive backs Illinois has liked to develop in recent years, the sort of player who may not arrive with a pile of offers but grows into a bigger role. He pointed to Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott as the player he tries to model his game after.
"I really look up to Ronnie Lott," he said. "I wear his number too.
I just love his mentality, you know? Just getting after every play, just destroying."
The visit is just one stop in a recruiting process that is still very much taking shape. Cambric said he’s looking for opportunities, connections, and “getting that college football mindset,” and he already has more visits lined up. He plans to see Northwestern, Michigan State, Miami and Wisconsin.
For now, Illinois has at least made a strong early impression on a rising in-state safety who is still figuring out where he fits next.
