Illinois got a mixed read Wednesday from the Big Ten’s first mid-week availability report ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 a.m. CT matchup at Ohio State in Columbus, and the most important takeaway is that the Illini’s injury picture is still very much in motion.
The only player listed as doubtful was receiver Jayshon Platt, a development that points in the wrong direction after there had been some cautious optimism about his status for Week 4. If and when he gets back to full strength, Platt is expected to handle Illinois’ WR3 role, and having him available - even in a limited role - would give quarterback Katin Houser another weapon. For now, though, that looks uncertain.
The biggest cluster of names landed in the questionable category, where Illinois’ offensive line makes up most of the list: Dezmond Schuster, Maika Matelau and Brandon Henderson are all there, along with defensive back Almirian Thomas. That group brings both relief and concern.
On one hand, it suggests the Illini could be close to getting that unit back to something near full strength, with TJ McMillen still out for the year. On the other hand, Matelau and Henderson are starters, and Illinois would love to have both back against the Buckeyes.
If neither can go, Schuster’s status becomes even more important at a key point in the season.
Even with the injuries, that offensive line has held up as a strength through three games. But that may be a tougher ask if those three linemen stay sidelined at Ohio State.
There was better news on the defensive side. Tywan Cox was listed as probable, which puts him on track to play Saturday. If that holds, he should start at cornerback opposite Juice Clarke.
The cleanest bit of good news came with Daniel Brown, who was not listed on the report at all. That is a major boost for Illinois, especially considering Brown had two starts in 2025 and was one of the few linebackers on the roster with meaningful game experience entering the season. He has not played yet in 2026 because of injury, but his return appears set for Saturday.
