For a game that finished with 93 points and 12 touchdowns, Illinois and Indiana somehow began with the kind of opening you’d expect in a sleepy November slugfest: both teams punted.
That didn’t last long on Nov. 11, 2023 in Champaign. Once the scoring finally started, it never really stopped, and Illinois rode a huge night from backup quarterback John Paddock to a 48-45 overtime win over the Hoosiers.
With Luke Altmeyer out, the Illini turned to Paddock, and he delivered one of the wildest passing performances in recent memory: 507 yards and four touchdowns. Indiana kept punching back, but Illinois kept finding answers, right down to the final play.
The first quarter opened with Caleb Griffin’s field goal, then an Indiana touchdown. Illinois answered with a 67-yard strike from Paddock to Isaiah Williams, then Reggie Love III punched in an 8-yard touchdown run. Griffin missed the extra point, and the chaos was underway.
The second quarter was the game’s loudest stretch. Indiana scored again to go up 14-9, but Paddock pushed Illinois into field goal range to trim the margin. Then came the swing that gave Indiana control for a moment: a Paddock interception led to two straight Hoosier touchdowns, moving the score to 27-12 after Chris Freeman’s extra point attempt was blocked.
Illinois didn’t fold. Paddock hit Casey Washington for a 20-yard touchdown, then found Pat Bryant for another score from 13 yards out. By halftime, the game had already turned into the kind of back-and-forth shootout that barely seemed real.
Indiana started the third quarter with a 27-26 lead, but the Illini defense helped flip things again when Jer’Zhan Newton forced a fumble on the opening drive of the half. After a stretch of punts, Paddock connected with Williams again, this time for 42 yards and a 33-27 Illinois lead.
Then Mac Resetich intercepted Brendan Sorsby, setting up another Illinois march. Love III finished it with a 37-yard touchdown run, though the two-point try failed and the Illini led 39-27.
Indiana responded with a touchdown to cut it to 39-34 early in the fourth. Illinois then went on the longest drive of the game, a 14-play, 72-yard possession that ate up 7 and a half minutes and ended with a field goal to make it an eight-point game. But Sorsby answered with a clutch drive of his own, bringing Indiana all the way back to tie it at 42.
Overtime belonged to the Hoosiers first. Freeman’s field goal put Indiana ahead 45-42 and forced Illinois to answer.
On third-and-6, Paddock looked like he was about to be swallowed up by pressure. Instead, he slipped free and fired a strike to Isaiah Williams on the run for a 21-yard game-winning touchdown, sealing the 48-45 Illinois victory.
