Illinois is heading into the Horseshoe with a massive uphill climb, and the gap between the Illini and Ohio State goes far beyond what happens on the field. The two programs sit in very different places when it comes to history, success, and especially money.
That financial divide is hard to ignore. According to a study by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, Ohio State’s roster budget lands in the $49 to $50 million range, the highest in college football. Illinois, meanwhile, is in the more crowded middle class, spending somewhere between $19 and $23 million on its roster.

That kind of spending trend is showing up everywhere at the top of the sport. The source material points to Indiana as an example: Curt Cignetti arrived, money followed, and the Hoosiers turned into a team with a championship in hand. Ohio State’s own title from two seasons ago also didn’t come cheap.
Miami fits the same pattern. The Hurricanes were the last team in and still pushed all the way to the National Championship last season. Ohio State, after losing earlier than expected, responded by spending even more and now sits above everyone else in the sport.
That leaves Illinois in a rough spot this weekend. The talent gap is real, and the Illini are nearly a four-touchdown underdog, which says plenty about how the matchup looks on paper. That doesn’t eliminate the chance of an upset, but it does make clear how much tougher this gets when the payrolls are so far apart.
Illinois has enough money in the roster to maybe hang around the College Football Playoff conversation as a lower seed, but the source material makes the ceiling pretty clear: this isn’t a roster built to go deep once it gets there. If the Illini want to stand with the sport’s biggest spenders, they’re going to have to commit more money to football, even if that’s complicated by the success of the basketball program right now.
