Illinois’ third training camp practice came with a new wrinkle on Wednesday evening at Gies Memorial Stadium: it was the first fully padded workout of camp. The catch was that local reporters couldn’t watch it unfold.
Even without access to the field, there was still plenty to take from the afternoon availability, when media spoke with RB Aidan Laughery, WR Collin Dixon and OL Brandon Henderson, along with OL coach Bart Miller and RB coach Tyrone Wheatley. The biggest theme to emerge was simple enough: Illinois is trying to build something new up front, and it’s doing it fast.
That matters because last year’s offensive line had a rare kind of familiarity. The group had spent so much time together that, by their own description, communication could happen with a glance instead of a word. It wasn’t a dominant unit, but that level of chemistry is gold for an offensive line.
This year’s group has to manufacture that feel almost from scratch. Four of the five multi-year starters from the past two seasons are gone to the NFL - J.C.
Davis, Josh Gesky, Melvin Priestly and Josh Kreutz - and the Illini have been chasing continuity since January. That challenge got even bigger when projected starting center Jake Renfro missed spring practice with an injury, leaving Illinois without any padded-practice reps together as a full unit.
So the push has been on in every other setting the program can create. Illinois has leaned into the weight room, workouts and even team bonding away from football, including dinners and cookouts, all in an effort to speed up the process and help the line develop the kind of trust that usually takes time to build.
There were also signs Wednesday that a few other storylines are starting to take shape around camp. One of them is Boyd’s big month, while another is the growing buzz around the freshmen running backs.
