Three weeks ago, Nebraska looked like a team headed in the right direction. Now the Cornhuskers are trying to stop a slide that has turned a 5-0 start into a three-game losing streak, and they’ll get their next shot Friday night in Champaign against an Illinois team that has suddenly found its stride.
The matchup kicks off at 7 p.m. CT on FOX, with both teams sitting at 5-3 overall and one win away from bowl eligibility. Illinois is 3-2 in Big Ten play after winning three straight, while Nebraska has dropped to 2-3 in the league after back-to-back-to-back heartbreakers.
That Nebraska skid has been brutal. The Cornhuskers fell 20-17 to Indiana, 17-14 to Oregon and then 17-10 to Washington, with all three losses coming by seven points or fewer. The most painful one came last week, when Nebraska carried a 7-3 lead deep into the fourth quarter against Washington before giving up two touchdowns in the final two minutes.
For a team that opened the year 5-0 for the first time since 2016, the collapse has been jarring. Nebraska entered the 2026 season hoping to take another step forward under fourth-year coach Matt Rhule, and for a while it looked like that plan was working.
Wins over Michigan State and Maryland helped fuel the hot start. Since then, the Huskers have been left chasing answers.
The offense has still put up numbers. Nebraska is averaging 32.4 points and 424.9 total yards per game, and quarterback Anthony Colandrea has been central to it all.
Through eight games, he has thrown for 1,825 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also brings a running threat that can change the shape of a drive, though his decision-making has been shaky at times, especially against Washington, when he threw three interceptions.
Nebraska’s ground game has been led by Jamal Rule, who has 463 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 73 carries. In the passing game, Kwazi Gilmer has become Colandrea’s top target with 42 catches for 545 yards and seven touchdowns, while Jacory Barney Jr. gives the Huskers another explosive option.
Even with those pieces, the recent inability to close out games has defined Nebraska’s last few weeks.
Defensively, though, the Cornhuskers have been as tough as advertised. They are giving up just 15.6 points and 270.8 total yards per game, numbers that rank among the nation’s top 15 in both categories.
Their run defense has been especially stingy, allowing only 91.1 rushing yards per game, and Nebraska leads the nation in third-down defense. The pass rush has also been active, with 23 sacks through eight games.
Jahsear Whittington leads the team with 4.5 sacks.
That makes Nebraska a difficult opponent for Illinois, even with the losing streak. The Illini are coming off a 20-17 win at Maryland, sealed by Ethan Moczulski’s 26-yard field goal as time expired. It was Illinois’ third straight victory and a result that kept its bowl hopes alive with four games left.
Katin Houser returned from injury in that game and threw for 223 yards, while Javari Barnett provided a lift with a 64-yard touchdown run. Still, Illinois will need a cleaner offensive showing to move the ball against Nebraska’s defense.
The teams last met in 2024, when Illinois won 31-24 in overtime in Lincoln. This time, both sides arrive with momentum in opposite directions - Illinois trying to extend its winning streak, Nebraska trying to keep its season from slipping further.

Illinois Blowout Came With A New Injury Concern Fans Will Hate
Illinois put together a lopsided win over Fairleigh Dickinson, rolling to a 120-45 victory that never left much doubt once the game got going. The night was supposed to be about a dominant performance and another chance to build momentum, but it also brought an unwelcome turn when Jake Davis went down with a shoulder injury and did not return.
Brad Underwoods postgame update did little to ease the concern, saying the injury did not sound good even though the full diagnosis was still unknown. For a team coming off such a runaway result, the bigger question now is how long it might have to manage without Davis and what the setback means as Illinois moves forward. [Read more 🡒]
Illinois Just Got More Proof This Roster Is Nationally Respected
Illinois keeps collecting signs that the rest of the sport is paying close attention, and the latest comes from the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Tomislav Ivisic, David Mirkovic and Andrej Stojakovic were all named to the Jersey Mikes Naismith Trophy Mens College Player of the Year Watch List, another reminder that this roster is being viewed through a national lens before the season even gets rolling.
For Illinois, the recognition also speaks to how much talent is packed into a group that helped fuel last seasons run to the Final Four. Ivisic, Mirkovic and Stojakovic each bring a different rsum and skill set, but the common thread is clear: the Illini are not just hoping to be good, they are carrying the kind of individual star power that puts them in the same conversation with the countrys top programs. Illinois Already Showed Two Early Changes Fans Will Be Watching
Illinois opened the season against Fairleigh Dickinson with a look that suggested Brad Underwood is still sorting out exactly how he wants this group to function. The Illini mixed in full-court pressure and zone defense, a reminder that the staff is willing to vary the approach early while trying to find the right blend of disruption and discipline on that end of the floor.
Zvonimir Ivisic also drew attention for a different reason, as one of the teams top reserves did not get the kind of early run some might have expected. He played limited minutes and checked in later than other frontcourt options, which adds another layer to the lineup questions Illinois is already exploring as the rotation takes shape.
